Hello,

I’ve got a 3rd Gen Tacoma SR5.

I’m building a capper for it and would like to add a 3rd brake light.

Does your harness allow for the 3 brake light to illuminated as a “running” light when the headlights are on and then to illuminate brightly when brakes are applied?

What is the cost for the harness?

What time frame for delivery? (I’m in no great hurry as I’ve got a couple of months to complete this project.)

How do I pay?

You pulled the part number a while back if memory serves, right? 6 pin?

I forget if we found it.

EDIT: I did 20s of searching and couldn't find it but I think you or ToyRunner posted up the deets somewhere, perhaps in a hitchpod thread.

I'm game for trying to dig it up, I think it was some unsealed 6 pin with 5 used, maybe black if I'm not mis-remembering? Shouldn't be hard once we have the part number.

Thanks. I will try to remember to take a closer look at the photo once I’m home to see if it works with the 6 I have.

I see the female for $8 on eBay but no male to match it there.

What we want to find next, ideally, is the manufacturers part number from the Toyota part number. Which is easier to do if a website happens to list both numbers together with a photo.

 

Question for those more knowledgeable than myself. Other than cost and tap location does this carry a benefit over a tap into the trailer harness?

 

I believe it is possible to purchase a gooseneck harness which is effectively a T off the trailer connector. I am not certain that can be installed entirely behind the bumper and out of view. It’s also bulky and would require some hacking to trim the fat.

This option is primarily about aesthetics for situations where max power / current are not of utmost importance such as extra brake lights on shells and soft toppers, tailgate light bar, rack lights, etc.

An ideal option would be an OEM intercept near the trailer connector which could be tapped in similar fashion but Toyota didn’t help us out with that.

 

That makes sense, I'll post pictures and parts numbers for what I have when I get back to the house.

By no means want to detract from the solution in this thread, but figured I'll share since it may be a better fit for some people.

I can make it with an extra wire that taps the parking light circuit. If your third brake light supports that, that should be all you need. If your third brake light doesn't support that, I could still make it do that (assuming it is an LED brake light) with some added hardware.

$25 shipped. $35 to Canada (it's like $15 to ship to Canada!) That is for a regular harness. That could include the parking light tap as well, but if you wanted to get fancy like described above, I would have to see what we are looking at.

I usually try to make batches, but any free time I have for large scale crimping has been occupied with headlight harnesses at the moment. So I am kind of doing these as one offs right now. I try to check on this thread every couple of days, but some days are better than others. But usually, after I contact you and we settle up, a day or two.

I take PayPal and Venmo. I can do Zelle in theory, but since it has worked like twice in the five or six times I've tried it, I am not guaranteeing anything with it. I have also had people mail me checks and cash. I'm pretty flexible.

That one did end up on the back burner for now. That is an odd connector.

I know Curt (I think? I can't seem to find it right now. @caribe makaira would know what it is. Caribe knows all ) makes a tee tap that goes behind the 7 pin and tees off of it. I think it has some type of logic to separate the turn from the turn/stop. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from using it and would offer up a link if I could find it. It's right around $70 IIRC. The main reason for the brake tap is just ease of use for toppers mainly. That is why I built my first one. Just a better alternative to tee taps. As to using these taps for other things, I would still say ease of use, and flexibility. I can make them to fit whatever you need usually, or do stuff like parking/brake lights to a single input light like described above. I've made these with diode set-ups for guys that want the added turn signals to function as chase lights as well, or the added reverse light to have a switch and be usable as a scene light. That kind of stuff.

In some cases it is I have no problem with people finding better solutions for anything. That is what makes forums great IMO. I've even posted DIY instructions for these exact taps. I'm not getting rich or anything, so it's all good. I just do these at a reasonable cost to support my other crimping habits

 

So this is what I have from Curt. I purchased this when I bought the truck because I wanted a clean flat connector to plug in my Putco Blade butt lights. It is a lot of harness to shove behind the bumper but I made it work. Eventually I may pull it and shorten the cable. Sorry for the bad picture.

 

Yep, pretty decent option overall. Might be nice to have some loom or at least tape to protect those wires but they are reasonably safe tucked in up there.

No DIR though, that part makes me sad

 

Yeah, I may have to order one of those from you at some point. I'm open to ideas for protecting the 'T' in the Curt harness, I've got nothing

For protection, I think many people have fondness for tessa tape? I have 5 or 6 different types, I just buy everything Johnny suggests. Jungle store or the bay of fleas.

 

I do have a couple rolls of Tessa tape somewhere. I guess that's a solution, just might take a whole roll . I was hoping there was some magical 'T' shaped wire loom out there.

 

I've had dreams of a T or Y shaped piece of heat shrink and haven't found anything reasonable despite some effort looking.

Something sorta like this but not at that price.

 

Yes! I would love a heat-shrink Y. My guess is that it wouldn't really shrink consistently, too many directions to get pulled in.

I used some of these which have generous heat shrink skirts that are sized well for splices, but they're still not quite sealed the way I'd like. I ran individual heat shrinks up the wires before heating these up over them, to try and seal them a little better.
