Then why is a third brake light required, if not for safety.

I went to Toyota over an issue I had with a local dealer. They applied the undercoating (per recall for rust through) on my 2010 Tacoma. They pulled off all of the heat shields, because it made it easier to do the spraying. Truck started overheating because of this. Toyota did absolutely nothing. They left it up to me to fight it out with the dealer.

My point is that if so many of us have these problems, and Toyota is fully aware, they should fix it at no cost, regardless of warranty. How many times do you need to pay to fix something?

I tried to loosen the light assembly and had a tough time doing it. Broke one of the clips on the side trim (urgh). Couldn’t get the nuts to loosen up. Gave up and put a light bead of silicone around the outside for now. Couldn’t find a good video on how to do it. It was 85 degrees with 90% humidity today too.

If this is a known issue, happening to a large number of vehicles over several model years, it’s a defect that they should fix. You buy Toyota for quality, not to have to fix things yourself.

I’ve been looking for a diagram of their location and can’t find one. I’d pack the connections myself if I knew where they were located.

If we could get the word out and get enough complaints, they’d take notice. Also, I’m getting old and not able to do a lot of the work I once could.

Two different issues. Just pointing out that Toyota knows, keeps taking our $$ and the sheep keep moving along in the line.

By your logic, every TSB item should be fixed by Toyota past warranty forever. No automaker is that generous. I never had this issue. None of the folks in my off-road club had this issue. I just debunked your $900 claim with a listing for a $70 OEM part. Sorry your torches and pitchforks movement isn't going well.

Talk to any dealership tech , they will be able to rattle off dozens of problems they come across , specific to models and years. They are encyclopedias of common problems. Why ? Because thats the way factory warranties work. Im on your side 100% , but these things are common with any make/model. Toyota reliability is branded on having less issues but that doesn’t help you here.

My advice is to contact corporate. The buck stops with them. If they can goodwill some type of repair for you , they will. If they can’t , they wont.

Their goodwill absolutely depends on how long you have been a customer and how much you spend with Toyotas svc dept.

Mercedes, Ford , Audi, etc all do the same when it comes to out of warranty repairs. Its not a guarantee, but sometimes they do step up.

a TSB is a DIY guide.
In the same exact way a timing belt DIY is nothing more than a guide to change your tbelt.
By their logic, the mere existence of a belt that needs changing, and a DIY aware of it, means somebody else should change their belt for the rest of their life

Toyota is not always a lot more reliable
the cheap economy sedans they produce just have less moving parts
there is less to break when the entire car is 5 parts

on a forum full of people who post about repairing and upgrade their trucks themselves
    interesting
If it's a known issue (any vehicle or product has issues) it means they might develop an improved part
for you to get in line and buy and possibly pay someone else to install if you don't feel like installing it yourself

either that or figuring out a solution yourself
possibly patenting and selling it to everyone else
or buying an upgrade from the aftermarket who might invent a solution
both common throughout history on any vehicle

Toyota is also known for affordable parts and being easy to work on
Oh, this part is only $30? Easy to install?
    people will still bitch
this is a lot to expect from a company that for the most part has pretty much been 10 years behind in every technology

how dare Toyota know what broke on their own car that came into their own dealership
and write it down so that 5 years from now on the next model they might try to avoid designing it in the same dumb way
maybe for my out of warranty design flaws, also in TSB's, I should just go Karen in the lobby
which will only cause embarrassment and nothing more

someone mentioned they check your money spent
Yeah. Exactly. You're on a forum. Doing your own oil changes. Bitching about a $30 part. They're gonna look and it's not gonna say you spent $5k. It's gonna say $0.
in the recent past, they couldn't make a frame that doesn't rust. And chose single stage paint that chips. It's normal

they literally don't release TSB information to the public
which is why you can't see any of the many they have
but folks think they're gonna go even farther beyond that and just start performing them for free
free parts, free labor, free loaner car, free everything

Did you take the headliner down from the inside? The silicone should work, the only place it can really leak is through the gasket, unless there's a crack in the light housing.

Good to know. On my 2019, mine had an error the other day and wouldn't turn on. The next day it did.

Someone ought to write up a thread detailing the recall and TSB processes, definitions, what types of flaws they cover, who issues, etc. And then it needs to be stickied. And posted to every thread like this.

I would suggest taking your service advisor out to a nice dinner, compliment how nice he looks, and give him something he can brag to his friends about.

Then after, and only afyer! they will probably still only consider doing recall work.
