I like to say something that's totally ridiculous and changes the subject.

For instance while he was bragging I would have said,
Hang on, I have a Smurf in my pocket.
Catches people off guard and they don't know how to respond, so it becomes the end of the conversation.

 

Love this, I do the same shit but haven't used a Smurf. I did recently ask a guy if he ever had poison sumac, I heard it itches.. He wasn't bragging, he was bitching but same wtf expression and end to convo. I'm using the smurf as soon as I have a chance.

 

Did he mention the sunglasses holder? That's all i've got.

 

A guy I used to work with had a technique for people like this. He called them “one-uppers”. So rather than participate in the one-upping, he’d go the other way. He’d immediately cave and tell the one-upper that he absolutely had a better truck, in fact it was waaay better. Or whatever the one-upping was about. One-uppers don’t know what to do in that situation, it totally diffuses their competitive fire.

 

Yeah one uppers are a trip....Jealous Haters lol...

How hard is it to throw someone a compliment these days??F-em

 

Oh, the one-uppers! These are some of the most annoying people! Brian Regan (stand up comic) calls it the "me monster". He has a good bit about them.

Every time you actually have a cool story, or something interesting to share they did something even cooler. Always.

I don't waste much time on one-uppers and bullshitters any more. I don't bother becoming friends with them. At social gatherings, I find and excuse to walk away. I might have to try the Smurf thing.

Also telling someone they have something in their teeth gets them to immediately shut their mouths and stop talking. Add that to the smurf list
