5100’s or 6112

Ready to buy but still undecided between the two. 2021 Off-road 4x4 DCB. Daily driver with weekend off-roading. Any advice experience is appreciated. Thanks

 

Availability may be the determining factor. Both are long waits, 6112's are far better for high speed gravel roads and offroading in general, 5100s are more of an OEM upgrade to what the Tacoma should have.

 

Are you asking if one is better than the other?

Or is the price difference worth it?

If you have the money, I’d go 6112.
But 5100’s are good. They do fine for most people.

I guess both? I’m sure the 6112 are better but would they be necessary, I have the money for them just want to be sure they are needed or would the 5100 with OME coils be good enough. I only want about a 2 inch lift.

You can obtain a 2 inch lift more than just different shocks. How serious are you offroad? Do you want 2 inch front or 2 inch front and back? The shocks themselves dknt address the back as far as height goes so you’ll need to decide blocks or leaf pack or AAL. That and keep in mind some people have to do the ECGS bushing when they do 2 inches of lift in front. Not always but often.

 

You get a lot more with the 6112
I can’t say what good enough is for you.

 

6112 for sure if you have the money. I have 6112/5160 on my 19 with a dakar leaf pack. I had 5100s on my 09. The 6112 setup is far superior in every way.

 

This is like a weekly question at this point. OP go full remote resi kings all 4 corners. Get you your 2inches of lift and some serious street cred while you're at it

 

More than just dirt roads but nothing too crazy, was thinking an AAL for rear.

Skip the add a leaf. You prob out grow that real quick. People knock the less expensive OME dakar leaf packs.. yea they squeak like your old wor out mattress. I have 40k+ on mine and I use em. I cary a tent and multi day camping gear quite often and it’s a daily driver and I have no complaints (other then the squeaks) with them coupled with wheelers super bumps. I know there’s better out there but they work great for me.

 

Personally, I'm going to run the 5100's because my truck sees pavement 90% of the time. Based on the way my truck performed off-road on stock suspension, the 5100's will be just fine for my needs. I also am not looking for much of a lift and would like to avoid messing with the needle bearing.

But like most people have said, it's hard for US to know what will work best for YOU. If you plan on adding a RTT, bed rack, armor, etc. you may want to proactively build a suspension setup that can handle it and go with something like the 6112. I recommend combing through the thousands of Bilstein threads on this forum, if you haven't already. Good luck on the build!

 

Thanks for input, I don’t plan on adding anything you listed I’m thinking the 5100’s would be sufficient the 6112’s didn’t seem to be that much more so I was thinking to just get those if they were really that much better

 

I'm not so sure that's true. I have the second gen Pro suspension which is simply non adjustable 6112's and I can't say that I think 5100's are any worse. I don't feel like the 6112's are anything special.

For 90% of Tacoma owners, the 5100's are probably the right choice.

 

Just for info if you go with the 5100's. I just bought a pair from Wheelers Off Road. Best price and if a first time buy another 10% off. The pair was $214 shipped to the house. They had them in stock.

 

I had vibes on the stock suspension, so don't be surprised if a bit of lift causes it to rear its ugly head.


Honestly, the needle bearing is a piece of cake. I was in there with a good local crew and insisted on replacing the seal thinking that it would be a safe bet at 53k. The job was pretty easy, but I (me!) over-drove the seal and caused a significant leak. I took it apart a couple days later by myself and swapped the seals.

The bushing goes in until it is flush with the face of the carrier. The seal goes in until it is flush with the face of the diff.

Just in case, the axle nut is 35mm. Most all autoparts stores have them.

 

Since it’s new truck, I would get Toyota lift kits for warranty purposes
