I have always understood that the further out the better to help with cornering. Most race trucks run them that way so I follow the formula. However the 1st Gens especially seem to do fine with them inside the frame rails. The Krawltex Motorsports 2001 Tacoma race truck runs the shocks inside the frame rails and that thing handles awesome. I am more comfortable cornering mine than that but I ride in the co-dog seat I have seen what others can make it do.

I understand that spring under is supposed to reduce axle wrap. How much axle wrap are you guys experiencing with spring under? This morning I hit a corner on the on ramp accelerating too much and I crazy axle-wrapped, the whole truck was jumping like crazy. Is this to be expected with a spring under set up still?

maybe a thread where its only pictures, no comments, but each picture has to come with a detailed explanation. If you want to ask a question, pm the person, and the person will also update their post with that information?

EXACTLY. Try to lose all the clutter. All of these threads are awesome for killing time at work but a "Long Travel Design" thread or something similar would be great for reference

Spring under does reduce axle wrap. A few things that can cause it are pinion angle, shock mount, u-bolt set-up etc. Drive shaft length could be a culprit too if its not the right length. Having the shock mount in front of the axle reduces axle wrap as well.

I love conflicting information on the internet :D especially in the same thread  I trust your words more than others tho.

Mine shocks are mounted pretty far forward of my axle, i'll have to check out my pinion angle when i get a chance.

Aaron, I remember when we put the Defined kit on Cliff's truck with Mike that was something important he said. We used this digital gauge to get it before we took anything off the truck and then when we welded the spring perches we had to use this formula to change the angle by a few degrees. Then after tac welding we re checked it like 5 or 6 times to make sure it was correct.

I get some axle wrap with my springs but it doesn't hop around I can feel the rear lift up a little at take off on the street. (it bring the shackles in and lifts the rear)

my ass perks up when I accelerate, but I really did gun it on that turn to the point where, if it was my original mid travel set up, I would have gone sideways whereas this morning I axle hopped. I like going sideways, I dont like axle hop. Make me go sideways guys!

Maybe I should have said that a spring under will prevent axle wrap if set-up properly. We went through a couple of different variations of my rear set-up to get it right. It took a lot of work.

Mike knows his stuff. My DMZ kit makes my rear end squat under acceleration a bit. I havent felt any axle wrap at all with this new rear set-up even at full throttle.

Thats because with the DMZ kit your shackles are facing up. When you accelerate yours move back making the truck squat. My truck has the shackles hanging down from the top of the frame and Aaron's truck has a shackle flip making his do the same thing as mine.

I'm trying to deiced how I should set-up the rear end on my 06. Is the 52.5" rule the same for new tacomas? I know you have to offset it from the frame on the rear hanger cause the way the frame dove tails but how much. Thinking I want to do a DMZ style (inverted shackle)

I get the principle but didnt remember that his shackles were set-up that way. I forgot that Engage flips them. If only our frames were straight and we could just hang shackles straight off the frame.
