What about flipping this design, hinges on head rail against cab, longer tubing to set tire at the tail gate, struts attached to bed rails, tire mounts face down and can be lifted/locked just high enough to clear drawer? Will also give you capabilities to mount other things to the support like high lift, shovel, what ever.

    Disregard lol

This is what I’ve ended up with so far. I don’t really like the barrel hinge. I found some heims but need bungs and jam nuts. Or I have some bushings laying around I could make a sleeve and bushing out of.

I’ve got a great solution for those hinges. Lemme dig up the link.

so I ended up digging around in the garage last night before work and found all the stuff I need to make a sleeved bushing so I’ll probably end up doing that. I’ll throw the bushings in the lathe and turn them down to fit and just sleeve them and weld em to the crossbar with two tabs. This way it’s still removable as well

How often are you getting in the box? How often are you carrying a spare?

Best thing imo is stop carrying a spare every day in town. Offroad try to limit what you need out of the box. Dealt with the same scenarios for a while and found that to be my best option

Dumb question but wouldn't it be easier to just cut the metal out of the wheel wells and tub them a bit to get the box between them and the spare against the cab? Then you have really easy access to the drawers like all the time.

Looks like he’s got a shock mount poking through on the edge of the wheel well, could be posing the issue.

I know I’m over complicating things but reality is I don’t go in the drawer unless we break something for the most part. Its mostly got spare parts, nuts and bolts, hoses, tools and other stuff

Not often into the box. It’s mainly spare parts and tools. I’ll keep recovery stuff in the cab to make getting to easier but that’s really just a tree strap. I leave shackles on the bumpers and have an in cab winch controller.

spare stays in the truck. It’s pretty much a trail rig at this point so not worried about around town.
Thought of that as well. I don’t really want to cut the wheel wells and just some rough measurements I don’t think it’ll fit with the shock towers like someone else mentioned. They angle up and out so it may fit at the top but won’t sit flush on the floor. I also thought of cutting down the box or getting a different box but free stuff lol. I also don’t care for the tire above the bedside and the tires so fat it pretty much sits entirely above the bedside.
    This mainly.

How much gap would you have if you put the box to the tailgate as it wouldn’t sit flush? Would it sit above the bed rails?

Btw I’m all for building something just for the sake of seeing if you can. I approve 100%. Just playing the devils advocate here.

    keep them pics rolling in!

Would anyone advise against purchasing an 80cf C25 cylinder on Amazon? Prices are lower than my nearest Airgas in CA High Desert.

Airgas would be my ongoing source for gas. Just trying to reduce the startup cost as Airgas quoted my $375 for a 60cf cylinder.

They’re $250 (filled) at that link. Comes out to close to the same price as the Amazon link but I’d trust Cyberweld more that Amazon.

    Thanks, man.
I saw prices on that site, but I honestly thought they were too good to be true. Maybe I need to tone down my skepticism.
Is this where you purchase(d) your cylinder?
