Ok I said I’d share some of my weird strange adventures in the wilderness over the last 50 to 60 years.I’ll share this one and if ya all are still interested I’ll share more. Just a little about me to hopefully add some credence. I’m over 60, married, a college grad, retired from a managerial position in a Fortune 500 company. Been an avid outdoorsman since I was a kid. Hunting, fishing, backpacking, hiking, 4 wheeling, canoeing/boating. Spent thousands of hours in the wilderness. First solo backpack trip when I was 16. I still spend a lot of time in the outdoors but no longer backpack due to back problems. This experience happened in in 88 or 89, not sure exactly.
Back in the 80’s a group of us friends (we lived in N. Calif Bay Area) would drive to Red Lodge Montana and go for 7 to 10 day backpacking trout fishing trip in the Bear Tooth wilderness. One year I left a couple days early and packed into the lake which was our first overnight camp. Backpacking solo didn’t bother me, I did it all the time. It was mid September and there were no other vehicles at the trail head. About a 4.5 hour hike. Arrived at the little mountain lake we called hopper lake because of all the grasshoppers we’d catch there and use for trout bait. Walked across a log laying across an almost dry stream and arrived at camp about 2:00pm. (You’ll see why I mention the log a little later)I set up camp on the edge of the lake and gathered a bunch of dead fall fire wood, enough for my 2 nights there and also for when the rest of the group arrived. Did a little fishing, had dinner, and sat by the campfire reading a book. FYI I am always armed when I’m in the wilderness. That time I had a 44 mag Ruger Redhawk loaded with 300 grain hand loads. There are grizzly in the Bear Tooth mountains. Crawled into my 1 man tent and sleeping bag about 9:30. Around 11:00pm I woke up and could hear something moving around camp. There was also a slight putrid smell. My fear was that it was a grizzly. I know from experience bears often have a foul smell from what they eat and roll in. Black bear encounters I had several , generally not a problem but the grizzly is totally different , unpredictable and dangerous. I slowly crawled out of the ten fearing seeing a grizzly , flashlight and gun in hand. Saw nothing, looked all about camp but found no evidence of a grizzly or any other critter visiting camp.
I didn’t want to get back into my tent and was now wide awake. I restarted my camp fire and brewed some coffee and sat by the fire reading again. About an hour later I was ready to try to sleep again when “it” happened. I heard what I can best describe as a scream, growl, howl all rolled into one. It was loud and seemed to come from all around me I couldn’t pinpoint a direction. This went on for 30 to 40 seconds. It sounded like the gates of hell had opened. I can’t adequately describe how horrible and other worldly the sound was. The sound filled the forest. It stopped suddenly and then about a minute later it started again for another 30 or 40 seconds. Then stopped . I can definitely say this was no human or animal that made the sound. In fact I will say nothing earthly or this worldly made the sound. There were no other humans within at least 50 miles of me. It’s the most afraid I’ve ever been, ever. I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to get the hell out of there but I knew better than to try to hike the trail in pitch darkness. Too dangerous, likely get lost or hurt and I didn’t want to run into in the dark what ever made the scream. I had my gun in hand but I kinda felt it wouldn’t be much use against what ever made that sound. I built up my fire and sat with my back to the lake which was only about 15’ away and gripped my 44 mag. I sat there and brewed and drank coffee all night. I was on full alert all night staring into the darkness. I’m not sure why but I fired off 2 rounds , I guess to let what ever know I was armed and ready. I’ll say I don’t scare easy and I never back down. I grew up in a rough city, boxed amateur and pro, been shot at and faced down armed people, but I never knew fear like I experienced that night. The next morning I quickly packed up and started out, walking staff in one hand, other hand on the butt of my holstered gun.
As I was about to cross the little trickle of a stream I mentioned earlier I came to a sudden stop and the adrenaline started pumping again. The log I walked across the creek on was moved and now parallel with the stream. This log weighed several hundred pounds. It had been across the creek that last couple years we have been hiking that area. It would take several men to move it. A grizzly looking for grubs or something could probably move it. I quickly inspected the area all around the log but saw nothing to indicate what moved it (or why). No foot prints, claw marks, scrape or drag marks or anything else. This gave me an even worse feeling. I made it back to my truck at the trail head in record time. Still no other vehicles at the trail head.
I met up with the guys the next day and told them of my experiences. They called it my Bigfoot experience. If Bigfoot exists I still do not think it was any kind of Bigfoot thing. I went back to the lake with my friends and continued our backpacking adventure that week but it was uneventful. They lost any doubts they had of my tale when they saw the log moved. All 5 of us tried but could not move it and we tried hard. I went back the following year and that was our last trip to the bear tooth area.
That experience caused me some ptsd. I didn’t venture into the wilderness alone for a couple years. It was 3 years before I made my next solo backpack trip. Now a days I still venture into remote areas , sometimes solo but I’m hyper vigilant, hyper alert and pay close attention to my inner instincts. If my inner thoughts tell me not to do something or not to proceed or that there is dangerI pay attention.
I have a couple other experiences in the wilderness I may share with you all if you like.

I remember seeing Bigfoot for the first time as a kid. It was big and loud, awesome if you will.

The worse thing was being alone out there. Fear of the unknown especially when alone is probably the worst fear. I went back cause I felt safety in numbers. In addition one of the other guys was carrying a 44 mag also.

    Thanks for sharing that Ken.
Wow I could only imagine how that would've been hearing that and seeing the log moved (it was as if whatever it was wanted you to see it's power or something like that..... Also sounds to me like the kinda moment/s when the hair stands up on end all over your body.

My first paranormal/supernatural experience was also around 89 when I was a boy...

There's is ZERO question in my mind from my own personal encounters, that this world isn't just what you can see with your physical eyes...

And I know without asking you, if that was your first encounter, it forever changed your thoughts on the paradigms you had on life before if you'd ever questioned things being "real" like the things we're taught to think aren't etc.... And led you to know that, a lot of the stories people share are indeed real (not talking campfire "stories" for children obviously)...

    ///

On a side note, I can relate on the back problems, man do they suck... Been dealing with a flare up for the last year and a half with no breaks.. Herniated disc, sciatic pain, and lumbar muscle spasms. Fun fun times.

I broke your post into paragraphs so my old eyes could read it easier. I hope you don't mind.

    Scary reading for sure.

Sorry. I can actually write quite well. Wrote a master’s thesis back in the day. When it comes to the internet, like most I pay little attention to syntax, punctuation, sentence construction etc.etc. Just laziness. I think the internet promotes poor composition. I’ll share a couple more bizarre unusual things I’ve experienced and try to improve the composition, but no promise.

You can write quite well, and tell a good story. Just write a few sentences and hit the enter key twice. Makes it so much easier to read. Bring on more stories!

Nobody cares. You’re the type of douchebag naysayer aforementioned in this thread. Deflecting from the story with grammar Nazi tactics. Let’s indirectly debunk his story because he wrote it like he’s uneducated and attempt to belittle him. Grumpy asshat with a sick avatar for an ‘old man’.
