I would definitely do it if you have the chance. It's beautiful country out there. Just keep in mind the trail needs to have your attention and not the beautiful landscape.

Having randomly experienced altitude sickness one day after living out there a few months it can be quite disorienting. I don't think that is why most accidents happen though. That Ram just looks like he wasn't paying attention to where he was going. The staircase where most accidents seem to happen puts you downhill and off camber. Very easy for short wheel base vehicles to panic and tap there brakes too hard and flop. It is an uneasy feeling leaning downhill on the driver side and there being a small canyon to your left and very little sight of the road edge.

Not so good news for the road between Ouray and Silverton.

US 550 Red Mountain Pass lengthy closures set for power line reconstruction
July 16, 2021 - Utility project will impact travel for next few weeks
SOUTHWEST COLORADO —Travelers will encounter lengthy road closures on US 550 Red Mountain Pass over the next few weeks to allow for electrical utility work. San Miguel Power Association is clearing timber in preparation for a power line reconstruction project. Work is taking place on the north side of the pass summit between the communities of Ouray and Silverton. Significant closures are required to allow for safe helicopter operations to take place above the highway. (see attached flyer for project details)

Visit forest service websites or contact the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests, and the San Juan National Forest for information about potential closures of forest roads and trailheads on public lands.

    Travel Impacts

Travelers will encounter two four-hour closures, weekdays in the mornings and afternoons. When departing Silverton, northbound the closure point will be located near Engineer Mountain Trail, MP 89.5. When departing Ouray, the southbound closure point will be just south of Ouray, MP 92. The highway will remain open overnight and on weekends. If travelers cannot reach the closure points before the set closure times, they may consider the western alternate route via CO highway 145 through Telluride. Motorists are urged to take it slow and watch for flagging personnel and other workers on the roadway.

    July 19 - 30 (open on weekends)

    • CLOSED 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    • OPEN 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
    • CLOSED 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.
    • OPEN nightly from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.
    August 9 - 20 (open on weekends)
    • CLOSED 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    • OPEN 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
    • CLOSED 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.
    • OPEN nightly from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.

That covers most of the FS road access for primitive camping and passes in that stretch. Hope that doesn't mess up your group's plans.

We'll be staying in Silverton. Though I will be moving up to Ouray on Saturday, Aug 31st when the road is open. I will need to leave Ouray in the early morning hours on Aug 2nd to get past it before 8:30 AM. It may make Black Bear and Super Secret pass access challenging. Will need to get where we are going in the early hours.

    Good News!

The planned road closure has been delayed thru end of August at least.

From the mayor of Ouray on July 16th:

Important Update to the Proposed Closure of 550!
Thanks to a team effort, we were able to delay the work that would have had significant daily closures of 550 during the peak of our season. We hope to be meeting with representatives of SMPA and CDOT in the near future to find a schedule for the project that is less impactful to our community.
From the City, I would like to thank Mayor Pro Tem Wood, Councilman Boyd and Administrator Clarke for their support in making this happen. I’d also like to thank those from Silverton, San Juan County and various state entities for their support when I called. And thanks to the Board and Engineering Manager from SMPA as well as CDOT for listening and responding to our concerns.
We will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Well, good news for you, but maybe not for everyone! Hopefully it doesn't last through September . . .

Still looking for a camper shell. Anyone ever slept in the bed of the DCSB? Also do I need the transfer case drop on a 3in lift?

No one needs a transfer case drop... Perhaps you're referring to the diff drop?

The thing is with differential drop kits... Is it puts the differential in line to be the first thing you hit when you're off-roading. Even with a skid plate, if it bends cuz you hit a good rock it's going to smack your diff. Probably won't cause any issues... But if it does you'll be wishing for a tow truck. Lot of people opt to not use differential drop kits for this reason.

If your cv boot fins rub after the lift you will want one. Install your lift and check.

I may have said this before (if so, my bad), but a guy fleeing the police ran his car into my living room when I was a kid. I was napping and didn't wake up.

So basically, I don't think I'm ever going to get to feel an earthquake...

I've lived in AR my whole life and never felt one. I looked at that website and was surprised how many are in the Conway/Greenbrier area.

We live in Greenbrier. Back a few years ago when the Fayetteville shale play was in full swing, earthquakes became common. I know people will argue that it wasn't the fracking, but it won't change my mind.

It is an eerie feeling sitting on the patio, hearing & feeling a low rumble. Really freaked the dog out.........:rofl::rofl:
