1st Gen Lunchtable Thread - General Discussion

I'm guessing the flange the spindle bolts to is not square with the axle tube and the shaft is binding and the hub is under tension. It was under enough tension to chuck the C clip that holds the drive flange into the hub, anyways.

When I took it apart after purchase the wheel bearings on that side were shot. I took it at face value since it was a used axle and a little TLC wasn't unexpected. I replaced those and the axle seal. The seal failed after about 4ish months. Replaced it again. Broke the axle shaft on the outer end. Replaced the spindle, hub, wheel bearings, shaft, drive flange, everything. Chucked the axle seal again recently before the drive flange let itself out.

 

That sucks dude, no possibility to straighten it out?

 

So out of ignorance..can something like this be easily remedied?

Whether it's cutting off the flange and welding on a new one or something?

Only thing I can relate this to is in gunsmithing, when you cut new threads both into a barrel and receiver, and square the end of the receiver to ensure everything is flush for accuracy. Same thing with lapping the bolt and bolt face so they were flat/square.

Any room for play in something like an axle housing?

It could totally be done. i doubt the axle tube itself is bent given how beefy it is (though I've been wrong before).. But I think I'm done with this setup.

Yes, a factory 8" setup would be stronger than this axle in its current form. If I dropped $1200 on new rear shafts with 30 spline outers and drive flanges it would be stronger than stock but the ring and pinion would be the weakest link.

When I bought this setup I didn't realize how 19 spline outers were only rated for 35s.

 

Yup yup, I've been looking for a specific pinion flange for the rear that would let me keep the factory driveshaft but it doesn't seem to exist for the sterling I have sitting in my buddy's yard.

 

Wish I would have bought the last set of H2 wheels that popped up for $250 but my roommate gave me such a hard time about collecting parts I let him talk me out of it

Shop was going to redo the alignment, set everything up and said everything’s still in spec.

Any ideas on my the inside edges both front tires are wearing?

all new bushings and such.

wheel bearings do that?

 

I wanted something like this but TG and others only make them 29 spline, the sterling is 31 spline

 

Get one made? Or not worth it?

 

It could be done, definitely cheaper to get a new driveshaft haha

 

Take it to a different shop, most alignment problems are the guy holding the wrench when your truck is on the alignment rack... In my experience

Just looking at your truck does it look like it's got a lot of camber or toe?

 

how are your TREs and rack?


My truck would look good on the alignment rack then had enough play to be out of alignment with any movement

 

I think he replaced the otres, LBJ's and lca bushings
