Installed DT Header Strange faint ticking

    Hello everyone. Installed a Doug Thornley Header today in the taco. Nice header but what a bitch to get in-5 hours. I figured I might as well remove the secondary filter since I had everything appart. Everything went good drove around for a half hour and thank god no lights came on. When Im driving and I get on it I can hear almost like a ticking noise really faint. I dont know if this is normal due to the header or due to secondary air filter removal. Any help or advice on this would be appreciated.

    I have no clue.
    Sounds like an exhaust leak under load. Retighten the header bolts.

    you'll find that tons of people have that stock. my truck right off the lot sounds like it has a small exhaust leak under acceleration. very common. weird, but true.

    that said, if you redo the torque, and don't have a warped flange or crappy gasket, it could very well be the same sound that many of us experience as a result of certain valves and other mechanisms of the 4.0.

    I used the original bolt spring configuration where the header attached to the mid pipe. Do you think I should have used regular bolt and nut setup.

    Too few to list.
    I don't know what kind of gasket those headers come with but the trick I use for V8's with paper gaskets was to soak the gasket in water before an install and let them expand a bit and when everything is bolted and torqued to run the motor until it's hot and re-torque when it's cooled to help with the seal.

    Alright guys I will try to re-tighten all the bolts. I did not torque them because you cant get to most of them with a torque wrench so I just made them as tight as I could using either rachet or box wrench. Thanks - always appreciated

    I hope you fixed it man.... i had a hell of a time getting my leaks all sealed up after my URD y-pipe and DT longtube install. I originally bought new gaskets from Toyota, but then it leaked about 6 months later, so i ordered FEL PRO gaskets (btw, the fel pro gaskets cost $12 for 2 whereas the OEM ones are about $20 each).... The felpro ones are 100X better.

    So in the future, if you get more ticking, switch the gaskets and just tighten the bolts as much as you can since there is NO WAY you can get a torque wrench in there.

    No doubt bro. Real pain in the ass I really cringe when I think about having to pull this header. A couple of the bolts are a f*&king nightmares to get at. Ill try to tighten down everything again tomorrow.

    Problem fixed . Exhaust leak comming from flange between header and mid pipe. You cant use the original bolt/spring/nut this setup does not let you marry the two flanges together tight enough. I replace with a grade 8 bolts and nuts. Perfect no leak or ticking noises. Thanks to all of you for your input.

    now you just need a URD MAF CAL to tune it up right and you'll be running real good.
