Ok random question, has anyone here have any experience with an out of state dealer registering the truck for you? Bought my tacoma out of state, and dealer told me they were going to register it for me. Did a VIN check at my local dmv and sent it to the dealership. So now not really sure if my plates/registration will be sent to me or got to pick it up?

It all depends on your state. NJ sends your plates and registration to the dealership (regardless of where it's located) and you have to go pick them up or have the dealership mail them to you.

Many times dealers use an outside service to do out of state registrations they aren't dealing with on a regular basis. They will collect your sales tax and DMV fees, do all the paperwork and get your registration and tags issued. The dealer will either know the process themselves or can contact their outside service and ask them for you, so you are best directing your questions to them.

I live in Oklahoma and bought my truck in Kansas. It took 35 days for my registration information to be mailed.

I live in connecticut, bought the truck in ma. The ma. dealer did the registration so i could drive it home. Just be sure you transfer your insurance for them so they can proceed with the registration.

Bought my truck in ID, and they mailed all of the paperwork to my local DMV in MT. I was able to go in and register it about 2 weeks after the truck purchase.

When i bought my 4runner in Oregon the dealer recommended I do the registration myself because it would be faster. They were almost right. Only took 2 4 hour trips to the absoluteoy retarded california dmv. They made me get a smog test before registration. On a brand new never titled 4runner....

I live in Utah and purchased in Nevada. Dealer mailed the title to the DMV in Utah but I still had to go to the UT DMV to complete the process. I think I waited to go to the DMV until like 4 days before the temp tags were expiring to give the DMV time to receive everything.

I live in SC and purchased from a dealer in Kansas. It was a s**tshow that took several months to get completed because the dealer used a third party title company. Paper work sat on desks and got handed off several times because everyone was clueless, I had to call and chase the process around about a dozen times, they were saying my receipt from the tax office (that I had to physically mail in to them) was not adequate for some reason even though it had the date, check #, processors name etc on it, then changed their mind apparently because one day my plates just showed up in the mail....

    Good luck.

I bought a truck in Alabama when I lived in Mississippi and they said they covered all the taxes, registration, etc. for MS. That's what I was led to believe until I arrived at the DMV and owed an extra $750. Not the biggest deal but just because they say they "got it" doesn't mean they do.

I live in Alabama and bought a vehicle in Georgia. They did the Alabama title application and did not charge me any taxes. I had to do my own tag registration and pay the taxes in Alabama myself.

Second this. I bought my Taco in Dallas and the finance person they were going to take care of it. It was nearing the temporary tag expiry date so I called/emailed the dealership finance people. I told them I was going bring back my truck if they didn't send the registration papers. They used a third party to process the paperwork and if I remember it correctly, the registration was actually sent to them and they overnighted it to me.

I live in Colorado, but purchased the truck in Pennsylvania. The dealer registered it and the plates were sent to them and then they overnighted them to me.

    Stock, for now!
I bought my 21 taco in Alabama. They charged me (or that's what they told me) TN sales tax and would forward the info to my local dmv. 10 days later I get a call from local dmv telling me to come get my plates and registration as well as pay an additional $340 in taxes. So YMMV just depends on how your dealer does it

I live in Pennsylvania and bought my Tacoma in Timonium Maryland north of Baltimore. I had really no issues. They collected PA sales tax on the sale. They set me up with a temporary Maryland state tag. They sent in the registration and title applications though a notary service they used. I asked about this and was told they did it frequently so I wasn't very concerned. About 3 weeks later a new metal pa truck plate and my Pennsylvania registion documents and sales tax recpit arrived in the mail. The only thing was that once I got them and put them on the truck I did have to get a Pennsylvania state safety inspection and emissions testing done with in ten days. That was super simple, I just took it to the mechanic around the corner from work he did it and gave me a new car exemption on the emissions testing.

    Nothin crazy yet...
Same boat: bought mine in MD last week...PA mails registration / plates to dealer - they said they would mail them to my house.

PA also has annual inspection / emissions (simply a reason to charge us $$$)...MD doesnt, so thats an unforeseen expense the dealership is reimbursing me for.
