Maxed out at 133KMH - 83MPH

Hey everyone,

I have a 2020 OR, I have regeared to 5.29s and also added the OV Tune to compliment the 5.29s. I knew I would loose top end, but I didn't think this much would be lost. As you can see, I am maxed out at 133km/h at 3200 RPMs 6th gear. I tried to get more out of it, but it would just rev and the speedometer would not get any higher. My question to you is, is this a tune issue or is this a gear issue or a combination of both? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

 

Sounds like a tune issue cause you should be able to rev out 6th no problem regardless of what gears you have

 

It's because of the gears. You need to use vFtuner to reset the truck's max speed. If you tuned yourself, it's really simple. If someone else tuned your truck, they should have made the adjustment for you, and should correct it free of charge.


I have not geared my truck, although I have tuned a few regeared trucks. My basic understanding the speed limiter/gearing relationship is this:

Stock gear size = 3.90
New gear size = 5.29
Stock max speed (based on stock tires) = 112mph

3.90 / 5.29 * 112 = 82.57 mph is your new max speed because the truck "thinks" it's going 112.

 

Read thru the OV tune thread, there are fixes.

Did you tune yourself, or get someone else? You need the specific 5.29 tune.

 

Weirdly, the speed limiter is sensed on the AT output shaft speed. An easy edit or 5.29 vF Tune will correct that.

Thanks for your reply. This has been tuned by Matthew Wilson at Orange Virus tuning. This has the 5.29 tuning pack with 33's on it. Does anyone know the step by step on how to reset the max speed? I purchased the kit to tune myself, I just need a little help on a guide to get this done. Must go faster. Thanks!

 

I tuned myself using the tunes from OV. This has a specific tune for the 5.29 gears with 33 tires.

 

As per my post, my truck has an OV Tune specific for the 5.29 gears. I am trying to understand how this was missed.

 

If you can hit 88mph you can go back in time and never install the tune .

 

That is weird. The 5.29 tune should have you sorted, but the easy way is to edit your tune like so:

 

Agreed, but the edit in the post above is very easy. I'd use your 5.29 tune as the starting point.

 

If I recall correctly, they didn't "miss" this. They had reasons to NOT change the global speed limiter - most likely liability related.

Ok, so riddle me this then. What is the max speed reached without tuning or gearing, complete stock, for a 3rd gen Tacoma before the governor kicks in?

Not quite. The 5.29 tune allowed the speed limiter to go back to the Stock setting. Something like 108? It was said that the drag limit is right around there also.

 

Thanks for that. So for the record, I will set my max speed in the tune to 110 mph or for us canucks, 177km/h. Just to clear up any liability concerns. (We don't know how to sue in Canada, btw.)

 

or just remove the limiter

 

Most all values in the vF software are Science Units.
