Found my dream truck aesthetically (Voodoo blue long bed SR5, 6 cyl) but it's 2WD. I had a 2wd Colorado for 7 years, lived in snow and off roaded a lot and never had an issue. How does the 2wd tacoma handle anything off road? I'm a great driver.

Have a deposit in for an OR, magnetic grey, and I just have a damn pit in my stomach over it. It's also 4k more and the 200$ difference in monthly payments vs the SR5 could really help. I can afford the OR, but I would feel better at 4k less.

Currently I have an AWD Nissan Rogue, have never used the AWD. I own a farm but I know how to avoid the spots I would get stuck in.

    What would you do?

After having 4x4, I personally will never go back to 2wd

I drove a 2wd truck for a decade, only got stuck twice; once in snow, once on a boat ramp.
A locking rear axle will solve many traction issues, but ask yourself if the $1500 to install a locker is approaching the $4K more you pay for 4WD.
Is 4WD worth it? I think it is, but it also has a bunch of other detractors such as maintenance and fuel economy suffers a bit.
Still, I'd go 4WD if you can. Life is short. Get what you want.

Personally, I’d get the 4wd model, no question. (better to have and not need than …. yada, yada) :)

An unloaded 2wd pickup is the worst or near the worst vehicle in snow or any low traction situation. That’s not to say that you can make do. I drove several 2wd pickups and rwd cars in Minnesota winters. Would I want to now that I can afford 4wd? No. It sounds like 2wd has served your needs just fine. Only you can decide.

No, a steeper concrete one, but the tide was so far out my rear wheels went onto the rocks, iirc. It was a decade ago at least. A nice man in a Mercedes pulled me out the few feet I need to get traction. I always carry a recovery strap. Nice guy, he didn't mind looping it through his tow hook.

I came here to say the same. Being in Michigan, a 2WD pickup is pretty much pointless.

That being said, I used to drive a Mustang in the winter which taught me to respect the road so quite often I will drive in 2WD in the winter. But, God am I glad I have 4x4 when I need it.

if 2wd has functioned well for you for this long and you know how to make it work then maybe you would feel better financially sticking with the devil you know. It's up to you tho

So to clarify some stuff- when I owned my Chevy Colorado I lived in Lake Tahoe. Lots of snow and mudding. I live in Texas now. My only concern for 2WD is mud.

The reality of 'needing' a 4x4 is very slim for the most of us. But you will wish you had it that 1% chance you need it, and that's really what it comes down to IMHO. 4x4 also seems to draw greater demand when it comes time to selling, therefore may bring greater resale value. I have owned a Tacoma of every generation since 91, and was always surprised by how quickly they sold along with the price tag.. all 4x4s.

    Like, so many.
I had two 2wd trucks. I enjoyed them both. After owning a 4wd, I will never go back.

I had a 2 wheel drive Tacoma for years for work, I didn’t care for it. I owned 5 4x4’s now and I’ll never own a 2 wheel drive truck.

My 2nd gen was 2wd and I drove it for 11 years. Nothing wrong with 2wd but 4wd certainly expands the possibilities.

4x4 will allow you to get stuck and stranded in far more inaccessible places than a 2wd:rofl:

Unless of course you run in 2wd until you get stuck, then flip the switch to get out :)
