Have you added a USB/Aux port to your 2nd Gen that didn’t have one? I just put in a new head unit with Carplay capabilities and I’m not sure how to route/mount the USB cable/port or thr aux port for the microphone. I have an 07 which obviously doesn’t have an external USB port or mic.

    Welcome to TW!

What head unit did you go with..a newer Toyota, or aftermarket?

    Thanks!

I went with an aftermarket. Just a cheaper Dual with CarPlay. Got it all mounted up this evening and the fit isn’t perfect but it’ll work for what I need it to do (stream from my phone). Was using a Bluetooth speaker before.

I replaced my lighter socket with a flush mount usb. As for the mic, I routed it up through the a-pillar to just below my rear view mirror.

I thought about replacing one of the lighter sockets. How do you get to it to take it out? Got a pic of the mic setup?

Sorry. Can’t take a pic right now. Trucks in the shop.

you should be able to reach down through the radio opening to unhook the lighter socket from the back of the lower dash panel. Or if you want easier access, you can remove the whole panel if you feel up to it.

What is in the middle of the lighter sockets, wondering if you could use something there...

Mike I did a little different..I'll have to get a picture tomorrow, but I fed it up from the coin tray and used a small piece of Velcro to anchor it to the top of the steering column.

Took a razor blade to the trim piece and an Amazon usb extender. Fed the wires thru the back when I had the radio trim out. Clean and functional. Even got a short lightning cable to reach my phone mount.

Basics. Tires, painted headlighes, UHLM, baby winch in the bed, and heated mirrors :)
Clean install but I wouldn't personally recommend this location. Those ports are gonna get filled with all kinds of crap over time, sitting in a horizontal surface like that. Not to mention the ease of whacking that plugged-in cable and breaking it off. I'd at least get some kind of plug or cover for it.

Not being mean, just stuff I've had to learn the hard way lol

Does the radio have a usb out on the back ? If so what i did with mine is buy off Amazon and put in a blank if you have one or cut a spot. I still have this if you’re interested. I ended up getting a longer cord and running the usb into the center arm rest so I don’t see any wires 364945A6-1DE9-4F5D-8679-4F923AC21454.jpg9E2E383B-395A-49D1-A1A7-F1EA0B172C50.jpg

I bought the lower dash trim for a later year 2nd gen as my 06 didn't have anyplace for switches between the lighter and power outlets. I bought it originally for my seat heater controls and had 1 space leftover. I bought a metra aux/USB combo to fit in the 3rd switch hole.

tell me more about this! Does it swap out perfectly. With mine being an 07 there are no blanks between the outlets and it is angled so getting something in there flush would pose an issue I would think.

If so it sounds like a perfect solution. In fact, my 2010 has a USB and/or AUX port for where I'd plug into the factory radio on that panel.
