    I feel for you OP.

FWIW: the motor in my '99 Tacoma pooped the bed @ ~165k (it was solely from my be young & irresponsible) and it REALLY put me in a bind. But I found a junkyard engine w/ 119k on it's clock. Sold the truck 11yrs later with over 296k.

    pinstripes. lots of pinstripes.
At this point with the truck nonfunctional at the dealer, it'll be hard to get a second opinion by someone objective. Still, that would be well worth the time just because this seems like an odd failure.

Second choice would be take everything the dealer can give you (pics, explanation, etc) and dump it on here for all us keyboard mechanics to fight over.

Good luck getting it back on the road, hope it goes smoothly.

That sucks. Buying a Toyota for quality and dependability and it’s not. Curious to know exactly what the diagnosis is. Issue in the block, or the head? Dealer seemed pretty vague, I’d request to see the work order if they didn’t give you a good explanation.

The dealership won’t help cover anything, regardless of how much service you had done there. Perhaps being a “loyal” customer they know some money off the labor to help you out a little but certainly they won’t be able to warranty anything.

Also no need to explain your finances to anyone here. People are dicks to berate others, without knowing anything about that person or their situation. Lots here like to brag that they paid cash for their truck, or were able to put a sizable amount of money down. Guess that’s the reason why they are buying one of the cheapest trucks in the market. Probably the same people who are on here bitching this is a 40k truck and it shouldn’t have any problems. It sucks to see stuff like this happen to someone like yourself. I’d rather see it happen to one of these financial advisors on here.

Don’t throw away the baby with the bath water!

This could be something real simple, like a bad fuel pressure regulator or loose accessory belt. How long has the dealership had the truck to diagnose?

    Yeah, no explanation needed.
I would find out the dealers suggested fix first. You could let us know what they say. If they are going to put in a replacement long block (basically a completely new engine) then I wouldn't worry about reliability issues with it. I understand this situation wreaks of suckiness, but I'm sure your trucks value is high enough that the bank would roll this repair cost into the price of a refinance. What is loan value on your truck? Given it's in running condition it's surely worth more than what you owe and probably more than the current amount owed and a repair cost.
    Wishing you luck.

Not sure what I could add , but good luck. The best posts I believe recommend 2nd option, see if the dealership/ Toyota would work with you. But I would believe it's to late to get the engine oil tested as someone mentioned possible wrong oil or something. Most dealers have bulk oil and when I worked at the dealer it seemed every new tank had a different color/clearness. some times it looked used. Anyway good luck.

Hellcat motor...I'm sure there would be no fitment issues and totally wouldn't overpower and destroy all other drivetrain components. Great suggestion for a person looking for serious advice going through a shitty time in a poor financial position.

I would make it fit and you can purchase the crate motor with the transmission . More reliable than the piece of shit motor Toyota makes lately .

Seems like the most prudent decision. I'd sell it on CL and let people fight over it. I hope she doesn't get suckered into the sales dept where they offer her $2500 for the hulk and act like they're doing her a favor to get her behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla.

The better idea is to drain the oil and fill it with Lucas and motor honey, call Carvana. It sounds dirty but I knew someone that took their Chevy truck in at night to trade in because it would puff blue smoke on start up and the A/C was weak. I think he dumped two can of engine restore in that bitch and sent it

    Because it is..

I will second everyone else and say get it towed to an independent shop for a second diagnosis. And get as much information / documentation from the dealership as you can too.

"some how the motor failed" is just not good enough for me. They need to explain how. Def get a 2nd opinion.

I had a Chrysler Sebring motor lock up on me. Took it to a local shop that had done business with a few times and trusted them. They said motor was bad and I needed 4k for a new one. Fuck that. Found out it was just the alternator broke. Something like a $200 part to swap out.

Have them explain exactly what is wrong. And get a 2nd opinion. Or 3rd.

If it legit has motor problems trade it in, get you something new and move on with life.
I wouldn't fix it and then chase all kinds of other problems that will pop up in the future. Hoping the mechanics at Toyota drop a new motor in and don't mess anything else up in the process would not be my approach.

For all we know it has a bent valve and they replace the valve or head and she’s off and running. :goingcrazy: Why the service manager says it needs a complete new engine is beyond me. Can you upload a service diagnostic write up? I’m on board with a second opinion

Sorry if I overlooked it, but was it determined if this is the 2.7 or the 3.5?

When it rains, it pours. Hate to hear this, OP. Like others have said, I would want to know exactly what failed and why. Engine failures aren't that common. We have a few threads on here, but only a couple ever stated what the actual problem was and I think it was valve springs on both, if I remember correctly. Didn't require a new engine though. Personally, I would want a second opinion, but maybe the dealer can get Toyota to cover some of the cost? I don't know. Trading right now would be costly, but if you end up with a new engine, you could drive it until the market settles down a bit and then trade. Just a crappy situation all around.

Oh, if you find out exactly what happened, please update us on here. The information might be useful to someone else down the road. Best of luck getting this resolved. I hope it works out in your favor, OP!
