I know there are posts on rust but I have only had my first taco since Xmas (about 7 months). My baby is a 2021 OR.

Now like any normal Tacoma owner I decided to crawl underneath and get a look at the under bits and was shocked to find so much rust on painted parts so soon. Not sure what to do, call dealer, spray it or if this is normal then tell me not to worry and I will keep on keepin on. I also noticed rippling in the paint near the frame (circled in pic), is that normal? More sign of rust problems?

See pictures, thank you in advance!

Mine looks like that after a week and a half of ownership. Built June 26…already covered in surface rust. Taking steel wool to it next weekend and coating it.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Funny thing about ferrous metal (iron, steel) - it will oxidize (rust). Not every component gets a 'Perfect' application of protective coating.
Photo 1 - Typical lower edge body paint finish.
Photo 5 - Looks like 'goop' to seal a hole in the frame.
    All looks normal and typical.

Spray can of rust converter and follow up with Rustoleum flat black spray paint and bobs your uncle.

IMHO.....all looks normal. If the "rust" bothers you, then you could hit it with a spray of rust converter and paint.

Photo #5, looks like a plugged drain hole in the frame. I'd clear that out.

My 2021 that I picked up 4 weeks ago looks similar. Many unpainted metal parts will have rust on them before they leave the plant. As far as pic 5, mine has identical stuff plugging the frame hole. I am not going to worry about any of it. Up here in the rust belt this is all normal. Getting the truck professionally undercoated in about 6 weeks-prior to its first winter and salt season.

Dont take this the wrong way, but you and like 98% of folks on here need to learn the difference between surface rust and structural rust.

Everything you show looks ok to me. Ive seen worse vehicles NEW on the lot up here in the salt belt.

I agree completely that this is only surface rust I was just surprised that painted parts would show so much so fast and thought they may have done a poor job with the coating. I would rather know what’s going on and keep up to date with it since I plan to make this truck last. Thanks again!

I see you have snow in your profile pic. I would highly recommend you look into some sort of yearly undercoating and get in all the boxed sections of the frame specifically. Fluid Film is a big name, but there are several others. That will be one of the best things you can do for it

I told my girlfriend I was going to consult the Tacoma Gods and this is exactly why. Thanks for the recommendation!

If your on the ball, you'll get that surface rust under control then use one of the several rust inhibitor coatings on the entire undercarriage. I bought my 2020 early in spring, and waited for one of the hottest days in july to spray the chassis down with cosmoline rp-342. It was a bit of a chore sweating my ass off in a protective suit, but after one bad winter, and a year later, its been worth it. That undercarriage looks like the truck just rolled out of the factory.

Take it through a few mud holes, give everything a nice coating of earth. Rust just will dissappear.

Your location would help determine if this is normal. If it’s a CA truck you got problems, Minnesota, that’s mint.

So the only thing I guess I am not sure of is before spraying what if any prep do I need? If I take steel wool to it for example it will require fresh paint like rustoleum then the sealer. Don’t think it’s bad enough to warrant rubbing off all the factory coat. I think I will likely go fluid film or similar.

I will probably re paint what is shown in the first picture as that is visible walking up to the truck.

Truck is mostly in New Jersey so I would say it’s normal

new ones i from 2018+ now get a wax spray CPC in the boxed section of the frame from factory, i wonder if you can combine with other 3rd party CPC's like RP342 and Corrosion Free
