Dam, that's definitely something I don't understand, you might as well tell me a magician waved his wand over the truck and now it's better....

It isn't that bad. I admit, there may be a bit more behind it when you bring in Techstream. But it isn't bad.

Agreed. I started doing it on my own due to the distance I had to travel for a tune or a tune update. The first time was a bit nerve racking, but if you follow the detailed instructions, both here and from VFTuner, it’s a piece of cake. I have techstream, but have not yet updated my ecu on my 2021 to 04c21. The ECU update seems to have more potential to cause issues, which makes me nervous. I will have to do it eventually, but for now I am happy with what I have.

I am looking into a tuner/throttle response upgrade on my truck and have been skimming the pages here. Seems like Tacomaworld heavily recommends vF tuner by OVT as I have not found anything else. The main reason I am looking is to increase mpg. right now I’m floating around 15.5 in the city and about 14-15 on the highway. I live in Tucson, AZ. Just wondering without looking through the 118 pages plus the other pages on the other forums if this has a minor bump to mpg. People seem to like this KDMAX tune but I’m not sure what’s going on. Thanks

    Ashton,

it depends on your driving style concerning MPG, and the KDMAX is not billed as a tune to increase MPG. But in many peoples testimonies it seems to be the case.

It has increased mine by approximately 1.5 to 2.0 MPG in mixed driving. Having had a strictly Highway trip to test at this point. My current average after 5 tanks is 21.6 MPG (using reading from Entune).

Just makes sense since the gear shifting is more linear and smoother.

I've put on 4,000 miles with the KDMAX LT Premium tune. Fuel has been 91 ethanol free and 93 ethanol free. The truck runs and drives how I it want to. What more is there to say? Thanks @HCFR TACO22

Spending more $$$ on fuel for this truck is not an issue as it it not my daily driver. With the OEM tune and regular gas I was getting 16-17mpg, now I get 21-22.5mpg regularly. Trips under 5 miles will yield bad gas mileage. Trips over 5 miles yield the best gas mileage.

Hopefully the better fuel saves the cats...I had a 2005 Taco and the cats went bad, boy are they expensive.

As someone with the Tune now close to 500 miles in, in terms of MPG, initially I saw a slight decrease, but only in the first few miles. I also noticed a very slight stutter in the engine in the literal first few miles of test driving it. This stutter completely went away very quickly, within the first 10 miles. The engine shifting smoothness continued to improve to the point where it was seamless, you almost can’t even detect the shifts, a noticeable contrast from the OEM. The MPG also continued to improve but leveled out fairly early on, within the first 200 or so miles

In terms of MPG now at 500ish miles into the Tune, I get around 19.6-19.8 in the city and 20.0-21 on the freeway. This is slightly better, maybe 0.5 MPG better than I had with the stock tune. My mpg has always been partly helped by the fact that I have the stock-sized off road tires it came with, and zero heavy mods installed like rideplates, and my truck is only 2WD Off Road so lacking the slight extra weight from a 4WD setup

The thing is, when it comes to MPG, it is worth mentioning that when the truck becomes much more fun to drive and significantly faster on the low end, you WANT to drive fast everywhere. Even someone like me that normally drives like a putz, I have been giving it the beans much more often. And this will always result in lower MPG tune or no tune. I have the MPG display up at all times, and despite how fast I drive, I can’t get the MPG to tank below 19.0 MPG. Although with the way @Edge48 tuned mine, I have the midrange version of the tune and the ECT button bumps it up to the aggressive version. I still haven’t tried this yet but I’m assuming flipping on the ECT and punching it would probably be the thing that puts me to 18 MPG or lower

The big expectation to have shouldn’t be MPG benefits, but significant low end power and shifting smooth as butter

Overall the truck is an absolute blast to drive, and now all I can think about is getting a cold air intake on there next lol

I know the detection of the tune has been covered but has anyone had the dealership raise an eyebrow about the sensitivity of the throttle? I'd imagine a tech just driving it into the bay would notice it immediately.

I brought my whip in a few times with kruiser 4.0 installed and no mention was made. To give you an idea, I still fussed with the sensitive throttle after many months of daily use. I can't imagine it went unnoticed. My fall back was to claim 4.88 gears, if asked

6.0 SLT (AT), I can tell by the feel it wouldn't even think of chirping anything lol. Don't get me wrong, the truck drives way way better with the tune...it's just a very different animal than my 2nd gen 4.0 motor that had actual torque from a stop.

    The tune is the same.
The different throttle settings do not change the tune maps.
You will still have predictable, smooth shifting and all the improvements.

The WifeTip throttle is very close to the stock throttle settings. Gears 1-6.

I'm a little over a week, and about 300 (still in the "break in" phase) miles into my tune thanks to MGMSangTaco. And so far to me it's pretty underwhelming. The most noticeable was the tip in the first 2-3 days. After that, even it's not as noticeable anymore. My biggest hope in getting the tune was smoothing out shifting while towing my travel trailer. I have not had a chance to test that yet, and hopefully there is a better difference there.

Just had my truck in for an oil change. The tech brought it out and said this thing runs good. I heard him spin the tires on the way in and out. I just smiled and said thanks !!
