Already asked questions of drr a few posts ago.

    You ran "them"
    2+overload?
    3+overload?
    4+overload?
    3/4 ton?
    1 ton?

    Which "them" did you run?

    Are you running the overloads?
    Hows axle wrap?

    For starters.

Lots of cleaning the Core Support area with soap, water and a toothbrush. Then scuffed with a 3M pad, then refreshed with a new coat of paint.
Once the SmittyBilt winch gets bolted into the bumper, the chain hoist will do the lifting for final attachment.20210722_123700.jpg

Shock travel - Wheel travel.... Po-TAY-to, Po-TAH-to. The context of the discussion makes it pretty clear what we are talking about.

Here's an example of what "never" happens

"10 inch" Fox shock that doesn't have 10 inches of travel. Yes, 9.970 is close... but they also neglect to mention the 1/2 inch rubber doughnut. Which limits travel. If you want to get 10 inches of Shock Travel out of this "10 inch Fox Shock" you'll be rebuilding the shocks a lot.

    Thanks. It's my OCD.
I could have left it all covered in road grime, but I've always went above and beyond. Preventative TLC and maintenance.

Removed my old topper and put this ARE shell on. Its meant for a ford ranger so modifications had to be made, but it fits pretty well. Love the side doors (more functional) and so much lighter. Work in progress though....

extended - collapsed = shock travel = name of the shock.

Nobody is going to name there shock a 9 3/4" so it gets rounded to 10". Close enough.

I keep thinking you mean to say wheel travel but I don't think that is what you mean.

Ok... so now we've gotten one answer that shocks are NEVER named something different than what the shaft length is... and we've gotten another answer that says, essentially, it happens all the time, no big deal.

We were talking about shock sizes. Specifically what will fit under a bed without cutting, outboarding, or running the shocks at a crazy angle. I.E. shocks that will fit and how it relates to how much travel Chevy 63s offer. There are a lot of other factors at play that will effect the amount of wheel travel that have little to do with the 63s themselves. I.E how much do you want to cut the fenders, do you want to cut the fenders, do you want to run limit straps etc.

I think you guys are so interested in using semantics to somehow prove how I'm wrong, the forest is being lost due to the trees.

For the record, to those who haven't done any research on Chevy 63s

The statement "I run Chevy 63s" is almost a general as "I run leaf springs"

There have been nearly 20 different iterations of Chevy 63s over the years. "Chevy 63" refers to the length of the leaf. There have been 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton (typically thinner, not always) 1 ton (typically thicker, not always) There have been 2+ overload, 3+ overload, 4+ overload, and even some 5+ overload. Some people run 4 packs and take one leaf out. Some people just run 3 packs. Some people just run 2 packs. Some people run overloads, some don't... and then there are even the higher arched aftermarket leafs to add in the mix.

All of those things would have a great degree of effect on the ride characteristics, flex, payload capacity etc. Which is specifically why I said I'd like to pick some peoples brain who actually run them.

But since we're interested in proving me wrong, and accusing me of wanting to use other people's work without "doing my own research." Please, let's continue.

I like the subject. I think it would be a good idea to start a new thread. Specific on the topic, for 1st Gens.

Back to shock travel vs wheel travel. I think (not 100% sure) the misunderstanding is this.

If I'm holding a shock in my hand, the "shock travel" is going to be what ever the shaft length is minus any bump stop that is on the shaft. Which is actually, usually, not what the manufacture says it is (specifically because of the bump stop, but also because they round up their measurement).

If the shock is on the truck, the shock is only going to have as much "shock travel" as I allow it to have I.E. bump stops/limit straps. There are different reasons to limit travel, but almost all of those reasons involve clearance issues, in one way or another.

Example: my "10 inch" Fox shocks have 9.970 inch (minus .5 inch due to the rubber bump stop) "travel" without any other factors, while they are off the truck. I have additionally limited up travel because I don't want my tires ripping off my fender flares at full stuff. My leafs tap out on droop just before my shocks do, so I don't need limit straps. So my effective shock travel is around 9 3/8. My wheel travel, however is much more than that because my axle is a lever, and the shock travel is measured around 12 inches (or more) from the wheel center... which is effectively the end of the lever. (but that would depend on how you want to measure wheel travel. Some people would measure from the outer most part of the tire, which would give you a bigger "wheel travel" number)

So... essentially, shock travel off the truck and (actual) shock travel on the truck, aren't always the same thing. It's easier to measure shock travel than wheel travel, and it can give you a more precise way to quantify travel.

    No... More correctly...

    1. The vast majority of people wouldn't know the difference
    2. 555 is better than 200k mile OEM ball joints
    3. The vast majority of Ball joint failures aren't because they aren't OEM... It's specifically because they are OEM (original and neglected)
    4. OEM ball joints aren't forged with the blood of Samurai and quenched in the piss of their defeated
    5. You wont die and go to hell for running 555 ball joints.

Lmao... Oh, I know 100% I have a wheel bearing going out. It's on "the list."

Those things are a pain in the ass. I'm actually in the process of making press fixtures to help make it less of a pain in the ass. Along with, I'm setting up a second set of spindles, so I can rotate when I blow through the bearings.
