    Yeah.
Not a bad idea, if the engine is actually shot and if there is another truck available. She probably needs a long bed and to swap over her cap, and she might have to live with a mismatched color. And then, going into yet another 84 month loan with very little down payment. At the mileage she puts on that truck, the next one will have around 200K miles on the clock by the time it is paid off and the whole cycle likely starts again, if not soon after that.

Not sure how it could be worked, but getting a motor replaced and the cost rolled into some refinancing might be a good option. It actually might be quicker than trading it in if she has to wait on an available truck, and no messing with swapping things over or not getting the same color.

You make a good point @TenBeers . I'm assuming at least the dealer is convinced the engine is shot and I know my thoughts only work if the dealer (at the GM level) wants to help her and has something in inventory.

    Yeah.
See, things like this do happen, and not a lot of people replacing their motors yet, so I gotta think there are some good used options available to swap in.

But I am still not convinced yet that OP needs a new motor.

    OP,

Really sorry that this has happened to you. It sounds just terrible. To make matters worse, you are now on the clock so to speak about what to do about it. You can't change the past. You are where you are now -- and that is all that matters. I offer you no snark and I am rendering no judgment as to how you got here. Sounds like you were in a tight spot and you cannot be blamed -- you put your money in a basket of a sure thing -- long term Tacoma reliability. Unfortunately, this happens to be one of the times where the engine may have gone, you did nothing wrong and you are now in a rather difficult situation. I feel for you.

The key is how do you move forward.

One of the challenges that you have is that you can't really take the truck to multiple shops because it is not drivable. It is not logistically easy to get the trucks to other places to have them review the engine if it doesn't work. Can I assume that you don't have another car as well?

Before you make a decision, you need to look at a few key first steps:

    1) You need to verify the engine is shot and that it cannot be repaired. I grant you that this will be hard to do. You have to ask to meet with the service advisor and ask them to show you and explain exactly what they are seeing. If you can bring a friend or a third party mechanic to this conversation that may be your best bet. I say this because if I was in your shoes I am not sure I would be able to judge if what they are saying is accurate or not. I am not an expert. So your first step is to dive in to see what you can find out and what you can verify.

    2) You need to find a local mechanic that you trust to check out the truck at the dealer -- that may be tricky, I know. But also you need to ask that mechanic what it would take to fix the truck. In New York, we don't have tons of those people. Or if they are out there they are hard to find. Start by finding the right mechanic and asking him if you need to replace the engine how much it would cost. That is data point A.

    3) You need to get the dealer to give you a firm price on how much they will charge you to fix the engine -- parts, labor, etc. That is data point B.

    4) You need to ask the dealer if you just give them the truck as is how much they will give you for it. This may not be your best option but it would be good to know. That is data point C.

    5) You need to ask the dealer if you fix the engine and then trade the truck in on something (since you don't want to keep it at this point) how much would they give you? Again, that may not be your best option but it would be worth knowing. That is data point D.

    6) Finally, you need to do a reasonable guess as to how much you can get for the truck if you fix it and then sell it online (Carvanna, Craigslist, etc.). That is data point E.

Once you have this data, I bet the good folks here can help with the best strategy going forward. It won't be perfect but your best bet is to capture that data and try to make the best decision going forward.

Best of luck to you. I am sorry this is happening. But right now you are looking at the best possible solution to your situation and that will depend on what you find out by collecting a few numbers here and there.

    nine quarts?

per the manual it's supposed to hold about 6 quarts depending on which options you have.

Might be worth your time to contact corporate. If you have all service records, perhaps they’d try to do you a little favor and help you out on a new vehicle. Anything helps at this point. And I would think Toyota would want to get under your hood.

Depending on what is actually broken, an in chassis rebuild of the engine could be a possibility.

I would vote for a used engine out of a wreck. if you can get it under 50k miles you will atleast get another 100k out of it. I wouldnt lose confidence in the truck with a used engine either but you will need to cross that mental hurdle on your own. the dealer will be much more expensive for this work compared to an independent shop. Most engine swaps should be able to be done by a competent shop.
