I use a gallon size sprayer, filled with a solvent base undercarriage dressing. It is a commercial product used by detail shops. I put my truck on my lift, and coat the entire undercarriage. Three years later and still rust free. Granted I'm in the south east coat and my truck is garaged kept. Yes that helps but a little underbody cleaning and a protective coating is of help.

Depending how bad the surface rust is, you could take a power drill, and wire wheel off any rust then spray it with some rustoleum rust converter. When dry use whatever rust inhibitor you wish to coat the chassis. Fluid film is good, but it needs to be applied every year, or the rust will be back. Stuff like CRC, or cosmoline will hold up far longer, maybe needing only minor touchups. Theres a good reason the military, bmw, and mercedes use cosmoline.....its far more durable, and won't wash off after one winter.

This my justification for getting a new truck every 5-6 years.

We're putting our Denver home on the market in a week or so and moving back to Phoenix. You have to work pretty hard to make things rust there.
Sleep rust, sleep...your eyelids are getting heavy.

Those parts you see a lot of rust on are typically non-painted or lightly painted - differential flanges, rear axle unit bearings, drive shaft, and leaf springs. Where do you live - oiling the truck in the winter will definitely inhibit the amount of rust you see dramatically. I'm in the southwest, but with family in the northeast, I know how bad it is in the salt areas.

How realistic would it be to trade in a Tacoma every 6 to 12 months? 6 months seem premature, maybe trade in every spring once the winter precipitation is done. I wonder how much you would lose in the process. 12 months of payments, tax title and fees.

Toyota could probably do a 12 month lease on the Tacoma, and do very well.

I was merely mocking the op. Some of the surface rust pics like the driveshaft are very common on every vehicle whether a toyota or not. I don't think it'd ever be very wise to trade up on any vehicle every 6-12 months.

Hi There was a discussion on this and I posted a product #7 #16 & #17 that I have been using for years. Got some naysayers - but it really has proven itself to me and is about as easy to use as anything out there. Regards Scott

I have used a similar product on my '91 Dodge. You remove loose rust only, NOT down to bare metal. Then apply the product. Paint when dry.

I drove mine from dealer lot to have it undercoated with yearly applications afterwards. Now almost 9 years later not too bad imo. Did get the CRC treatment in October 2020.

I don't think it would be wise to trade every 6-12 months. The Toyota Tacoma would be the best vehicle if somebody was going to trade often. Still not a good idea.

I did a few salt damaged passenger busses about 6 years ago. They see all the weather in South Jersey. Those frames are still very very nice. Spent about 4 hours per bus brushing it on and still had plenty of material left over.

Its bad in the winter here in connecticut to. When i've been to emission testing in the past, its fairly often the owners are told their frames are toast from all the salt the roads here see. ...especially those disposable hyundai's, and kia's.

Yeah no rust in Nevada but free sand blasting though, if you park outside.
