Email service writer a pic cleaned, in case you need to take it back in, they had no incentive to clean it, that's extra work and taking away their excuse.

My service center is closed today. Does this look like a diff leak? I got a 2018 trd pro with 12000 miles on it.

Unless there's drop on the floor toyota will call it seepage. Depending on you adviser, they may just retorque and tell you to wait / observe or do the repair. On my 2017 trd offroad they did the repair but now its back. I just wiped it and it did not get worse.

Lol. But that seepage seems more extensive than mine. Hopefully they will take care of it

Likely not, but it's no harm to top it off. When you remove the fill plug diff fluid won't be up to the bottom of the opening. Min fill level is 5mm down from opening. There is no harm having the diff filled up to the opening.

I would brake cleaner your diff and see if it comes back. Could just be assembly lube for the gasket.

What is the torque spec of the rear diff bolts in case we want to do it ourselves?

I agree, always best to let the dealer do it. However, it may not always be convenient to leave your daily driver at the dealer just to torque a few bolts that are loose.

Is it that common to snap the bolt? Seems kind of odd.

I would say no, but when this issue started popping up... there were quite a few that did. Then the repair was on them, instead of Toyotas dime. Replacing a 3rd member can get expensive quick.

It’s the reason why i only go to one particular service advisor on all my vehicles for several years now. Never had an issue getting tsb or any issues done. Largely depends on the service advisor . He can talk to the Toyota tech if he wants to. That’s what he did for me for the tsb when the tech said can’t be duplicated.

Even then they would not fix mine... I asked the service advisor what's the purpose of a gasket?

I thought I chimed in here - I shared a similar experience with my 21 TRD Pro here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ause-its-the-toyota-way.724956/#post-25819977

    • Basically observed stains with similar pattern to prior posts before 10K miles (Exhibit #1).
    • I called Toyota which referred me a dealer. Also reported same to NHTSA because it was the subject of an earlier recall.
    • Took it to the dealer for the 10K service and "concern" about rear diff stain.
    • Dealer told me to come back so they can check with Toyota about the issue.
    • Dealer calls me back and said that Toyota said it is "normal" seepage. They cleaned and retorqued (Exhibit #2).
    • The stain is back (about 10.8 K miles) (Exhibit #3).
    • My take: Toyota did not apply the Toyota principle of continuous improvement.
