It was obviously a joke, I was using the "retarded " and "dont value time or money" directly from the original post, go back and read it.

I knew it was bro:thumbsup: Tacomas, and cars with a manual transmission are honestly a true store of value here. Forget bitcoin, gold. Just buy an 80's yota and paint it
Yet the 1st gen forums are very open to the idea. It's the case with any forum though, there's always the naysayers until they see it complete

Agreed, normally I'd say you are better off finding another truck that's already a manual, but with the current crazy used car market you may as well try this swap.

Having removed and reinstalled all this stuff before the biggest pain for me was getting the front diff in and out with the tube on. But I might be a puss with questionable upper body strength. Good luck and enjoy the ride...

I don’t know much about this swap, but imagine the installing the manual pedal assembly must be complicated?

Yeah I’m just sticking with an automatic since it’s my first major project, there’s only one thread for 2nd gen manual swap I’ve seen here

Almost had the diff bolted up today but didn’t have the right socket size:rofl: it’s sitting on the jack waiting for me to finish tomorrow. Getting that back bolt in was fun

Front diff is up! I’m tracking my work hours as well so we can have a concrete answer for n00b mechanic like me. 6hrs. 16min.

Spent about an hour organizing parts and planning how to lift it up. I used a motorcycle jack ordered off Amazon.

The breather hose came undone so that became a whole task in of itself:facepalm:

Nice. This is a super common conversion on first gens but I rarely see second gens with em. Good luck.

I converted my ‘98 back in 2017, was relatively simpler. It’s just manual hubs with a j-shift transfer case - no electrical or vacuum systems connected at all. Purely mechanical bolt on.

It’s only rare because seconds gens haven’t been around as long as first gens and not as many people document it. A little more work is involved with the ADD if you choose to keep it but I’d say if somebody dropped me off all the parts I could have it done in a weekend with a 6 hour beer pong tournament to spare. Biggest thing to overcome is growing the sack to not listen to the keyboard warriors that claim it’s not worth it.

Manual hubs would be nice, I don’t think there’s a ready-to-go 2nd gen option quite yet

i had a calc I did years ago that I proved manual hubs for the kit that cost around 1k for the fellow on here (which are weaker 1st gen parts) would take like 25 years to pay back assuming you broke nothing in that timeframe. Stick with the add or full time hubs.

edit. Found the thread. Not paid back in years but axles. “20 axle years”

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
Based on all the research I did, to include the multiple posts you had on why non ADD was better I was completely sold. It made sense, I was trying to convert my truck to 4x4 on the most reliable way possible. After the conversion and test phase was completed I was more than happy with the results plus I did not get any hits on the gas mileage. Either way you want to go(ADD or non ADD), you can’t beat that you gained shit tons of mechanical experience and saved crazy amounts of money due to the current Toyota and 4x4 market. Cheers.

The more I look at that ADD connector, the less I trust it:rofl:
definitely want the mechanical experience too. Got another car that will probably need a new clutch soon so this is perfect practice

Passenger's side CV axle stumping me this afternoon. I've read everything from "slides in like butter no hammer needed", to "I hit it with the biggest fucking hammer I could find".

When I insert it I feel like it keys into place but no matter how much I hammer with the dead blow hammer it won't budge. Should I just hit it harder? Or will it really slide in like butter?
