I THOUGHT I HAD THE TOW PACKAGE -- WHERE'S THE EXTERNAL COOLER??

If you paid for it , it should be there . If you have a good argument and evidence showing you paid for it I would go to the dealership and say hay fix this now.

 

I have the PowerStop brake kit on my truck and they work awesome! I wore out my original brakes by towing without a brake controller. I wouldn’t, but with the new brakes I feel like I could easily stop the truck and trailer, even without a brake controller setup.

 

Well it was part of the trucks package, so that didn't change the sticker price. I was ready to talk with the dealer - but after finding out that it has been deleted well before my build - I don't think it would help. Also, I think I'm better off to add a larger cooler since the room is there and I like to exercise my creative abilities.

 

I noticed quite a difference in the Exterra stopping abilities for sure. What amazed me the most was the noticeable weight difference in the rotors from stock. Just picking up the box told me how nice a product they were - and almost no break dust down the road.

 

They felt lighter for sure, didn’t weigh them or anything but I don’t believe it to have been a trick of the mind.

I will say, they do squeak every single time I first move the truck for the day, but in my experience most “high performance” ceramic brakes do. But they generally only do it once, backing out of my driveway and then don’t do it again till the next day.

 

Yeah - they will be my next mod for sure !! I'll live with a little peep now and then. The Exterra never made a noise at all.

 

I have a 2020 v6 auto with build date 11/19 in Texas that has the trans cooler.

 

Seems they quietly deleted trans coolers Mid2020 model year.

 

I don’t necessarily believe that Toyota decided the auxiliary transmission cooler wasn’t needed. Instead, they probably decided removing it didn’t move the needle on the MTBF for the transmission. Now add in that it’s one less part to warranty. For those that use it as a DD and never change elevation, it was probably overkill. For those 0.01% that tow heavy or drive significant elevation change, sorry for ya. That’s what happens when you live at one end of the bell curve.

 

Could be. For my 2nd gen I specifically needed the tow package because of the towing I would be doing. Back then the tow package was an option. Once Toyota started including the package with all V-6 models , that may have become an issue.

 

Unless it is listed on the build sheet, you got nothing to argue. The dealership literature always says something to the effect of, "details subject to change after printing of this literature." They did the same thing in 2014 with the temp gauge/thermometer in the rearview mirror. The book I grabbed when I put my money down said my truck would have it. Two months later, no temp/direction in my mirror when it showed up.

 

My 16 had it. My 12 doesn't but am adding one. I am a firm believer in tranny coolers. I used to pull a 5k pound dry weight boat. I had a F150 V8 that didn't have a cooler. While backing my boat uphill in my driveway tranny fluid boiled up and out of the dipstick tube (search Google for transmission dipstick). I immediately added a 7.5k rated cooler to that one. So you cannot tell me it is not needed. So where does the boiling fluid go when there is no dipstick tube.. I guess Toyota decided to spend that money on the high def speakers instead.

 

1990 Dodge Dakota 350 Chevy engine -- Turbo 400 Trans -- One ton GM full floating 8 lug rear. (3) trans coolers with 180,000 miles on factory rebuilt trans and the fluid looks like it just came out of the jug. I service it every 35,000 miles. I am a total believer !!! My Tacoma has a tough image to follow !! Still keeping the Dodge for the really hard jobs.

 

I've had my trans thermostat pinned for 3 yrs. No issues. I also put a fan on the factory external cooler. In 95 degree summer, trans stays below 170f. Cooler oil = longer life. Unless you live in Alaska. Then "to cool" may be an issue.

 

Is that a sport thing ? My off-road has it and it’s a 20 .

 

In that case just bypass the factory radiator completely to eliminate the risk of coolant mixing with trans fluid (though Tacomas don't have this as a systemic issue like 3rd gen 4Runners did).

 

Same, was said of the 2019 models although my 19 Sport came with one.

 

My 2020 TRD Off Road came with a transmission Cooler. The sticker lists it as an engine oil cooler. I was concerned about the wording, but my dealer showed me the tech sheet showing the cooler, and it’s lines to the transmission. I installed a temperature gauge for the tranny, and pulled a 3500 pound trailer and the temp remained below 200.

 

You don't know if the lack of an external cooler is going to be a problem until you install a temp gauge and monitor it

 

I believe in March or April of 20 they stopped putting the external cooler in. I do not know exactly and am going from memory, but there is a thread with the info linked in this thread about the missing cooler. Bottom line is if your truck is a truck built before March or April of 20, it has an external cooler. If you have a truck built after that, you don't. It was a mid year switch.

Again I'm going from memory so refer to the link for the correct info. But it is possible to have 2 2020 tacos be different in this regard.
