So I bought my 1st gen a few months back with a 4” pro comp lift already installed. I’m gonna be changing the lower ball joints and rack bushings in the next week or so as they’re on the way out. Typically I would do the upper ball joints at the same time just for peace of mind, but I’ve got the weird ball joint spacer thing pro comp includes in their kit.

After tons or research on the PC kit, mostly all bad, I’m considering ditching it in the near future for an icon or fox kit. My question is, am I going to have to swap back to a stock subframe and ditch the PC bits?

    recommendations?

I did on mine. Look between where your lower control arms are bolted to the frame and see if they cut out any to lower the front diff. If they did you can section out the bit on your lift that holds your rack and weld it up into your truck in the factory spot. It was a long ass journey for me to revert mine but in the end this is what I had done. Now it’s on OME 881 coils in the front for about 2 inch lift.

I don’t necessarily want to lose any lift though. I like the height it’s at now.

Oh well then I suggest just keeping it on there bc it’s a sizable pain in the ass to change it back. I must have misunderstood your post. If it’s the ball joint spacers you wanna lose then I think fab tech or something makes a taller spindle. But then you’ll be spending a large amount of money going down a direction that seems not worth it. I’d just stick with what’s in there until you don’t want it anymore.

To be honest this may be the way. As much as I spent to go back to factory I could almost have gone solid axle swap. I don’t think that’s the way for me bc I don’t want to be that high up.

yeah SAS is a possibility much later on as I don’t want to take my truck off the road for an extended period of time right now.

Run what’s on there until you save up for it. Not worth getting into it for temporary benefits

Can you swap and stay low? What are the pros and cons? Tbh ifs has been the bane of my existence for over a year.

If you don't offroad, it's pointless and expensive. Will cost more if you can do the work yourself.

That’s what I figured. I plan to “off road” but I don’t know if you’d call it that bc by off road I only mean trails and fields and streams. I wouldn’t make this truck get on anything serious. Got too much money into it and I don’t make enough to be breaking stuff on purpose.

Most guys I know with a solid axle tacoma have well over $10k+ on parts alone. If you don't rock crawl or get into gnarly obstacles, keep it IFS.

A SAC isn't cheap by any means, regardless of leafs or links.
I went with links from 4WU and Front Range Off Road for their Diamond axle.
My frame is 22" from the ground and I'm on 33's at the moment, not tall at all.

I’ve always assumed you could do it, since they use to come that way stock. But I’ve never seen an axle swap where it was left near stock height. That’s awesome. Any side pics?

Anything is possible with $$$. Running 12" CO with taller towers and 33~35" tire will keep you low.

Hey man I got the same problem you do. Got the same exact grenade ball joint spacer and it's fkn ridiculous. I hope you see this because I really need to know how you get the ball joints pressed into it. I got import direct ball joints from oreillys which was recommended by 4wd parts because they said its the closest thing to OEM. Regular ball joint press doesn't fit in the grenade to i made a jig with a c clamp and the ball joint press cups but can't get it pressed far In enough to put the c clip on. Got my truck sitting in the garage on jack stands until I find a solution.

I’m late to the party here and just discovered my wife’s 2000 had this terrible drop bracket lift after breaking the LBJs.

has anybody successfully deleted the lift or is it just not worth it? I understand the geometry it’s now is going to be Hell on the new OEM parts I just spent a lot of time and money on

If you can find the cut piece from a wrecked Tacoma and cut it out. Mock it yours and weld it on. Is been done, check the first gen built page, I recall someone doing just that a few years back.

    Or you can SA…
