They're built kinda tough.

 

People mostly like them just because they can’t have them. A 79 series land cruiser is my favorite thing I can’t have ( yet, couple more years and they are legal to import). The Tacoma is basically the less badass version of the hilux although I think the Tacoma is better to look at. They are just cool, light, diesel 4wds that can take a beating.

I do like the solid front axle.

 

I don't think any modern Hilux has a solid front axle. They've been IFS for while. Unless you meant the older versions.

 

Haha so true. If you want a Hilux, go buy one. It’d be cheaper to import an old one than to go buy that POS.

My buddy from Australia hated the 1KD. Considers it pretty gutless.

The Tacoma (all generations) is a watered down version designed by Toyota for the modern American mall crawler.

With that said, I’ve always wondered how my 2014 TRD OR would do on that show. The 1GR was used for the LC, LC Prado, Hilux and other overseas Toyota’s 4x4’s for over a decade. It’d be interesting to see how the 1GR (as opposed to the 1KD) coupled with a channel frame holds up in those conditions

 

The hilux isnt any better or worse than the Tacoma either going to the mall or driving down a dirt road.

i think the only difference is the engine and front end and interior bling. Otherwise it’s the same suspension I believe. Now there are flatbed options available so probably different spring rates for those models. Also a new diesel has been released so this should help with those that need to go faster. Why I dunno.

 

Or how about the injector problem, holes in piston problem and clogged oil pickup problem. At least with the KZ you could keep an eye on temperature, where as with the KD, keep the pick up clean (every oil change) and pray for the best.

Hilarious, $65k for 195 HP. Yeah good luck with that one bud. This fetishization of diesels has to stop. That thing will be slowwwww with that kinda HP. My Chevy Volt has the same amount of Torque, its nothing special.

The only way it makes sense is if hes pushing 300 HP and 500 Ft/lbs. Something that will actually increase the utility of the truck measurably. This is worthless in its current form vs the V6.... Its not going to tow any more and it'll be slower doing it too. You could claim it will be more economical but you'll never get close to recovering even a fraction of the $30000 it cost to convert it.

God forbid they take it on the Ike Gauntlet and put 7500 lbs behind it. It would probably manage 40-45 MPH if it were lucky. Just not enough HP.

 

Having watched a lot of discussion from ASPW/4xOverland/etc talk about Australia / Africa, I think the motor would do fine. I think a lot of the suspension components, radiator support, etc would fail much sooner on some of those rugged tracks.

 

The reason for a diesel is the higher torque on the vehicle, (almost double...)
BUT....
The Rivian R1T has
Horsepower 835 hp
Torque 908 lb-ft

That's like almost 4 times the current Tacoma, and Toyota is coming with their own Electric Truck which will have similar numbers, so the point is
72K for a 400+ lb-ft truck or wait for a brand new electric tacoma, with 900+ lb-ft !!!!!

Perhaps Jay Leno can add it to his garage...

 

Diesel can sustain those torque numbers for a longer time than a gasser or an electric.

I mean The R1T can go for a whopping 150-ish miles when towing before needing another charge.

 

There was an article posted recently about a towing test I think in Denver and the Rivian only went 118 miles while towing
