She stated she had no mechanical knowledge and folks are recommending pulling the motor and replacing bearings...not sure I'd have stuck around either!

    Hi @HMR06

Have not read the entire thread. My first question is HAD YOU DRIVEN THRU STANDING WATER PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING? You mentioned floods.

Your engine failure and the fact you mentioned flash floods screams water loss to me as a claims adjuster and possibly covered under comprehensive coverage. I would call your insurance company and get them involved, IF you had driven thru any amount of water.

It don't take much water to bend a rod.

This..and opportunity cost. It's more worth my while to pay someone else to change the oil in my truck at 47 years old now. When I was 17 it made more sense for me to DIY it, cost was less plus it was easier back then to dispose of the old oil. As a homeowner I need to do other things that would cost more to hire out.

Yup. An old manager of mine went through a puddle one night and tossed a rod right through the block on his Ford Ranger.

    pinstripes. lots of pinstripes.
Good point, but I thought OP was mentioning flash flooding as a possible cause of water in gas, which they weren't sure of.

Good attention to detail in the post makes me think they would have mentioned driving through flooding, but this is just a big assumption.

Is it proven that it's a failed motor and not just a horrible misfire or ECU problem?

It's pretty rare for a motor to just up and go like that unless you started seeing early signs thousands of miles ago. Especially not throwing a CEL. There has got to be a CEL at this point right?

OP is not coming back, she listened Itchyfeet, put 90 weight oil in the crankcase, drove truck directly onto the Carvana roll up tow truck. Now we’ll here nothing as to what happened to a seemingly perfectly good engine.

Nope, I got all that the first time. Still blown away that any one would imply changing rod bearings is an 8 hour option.

Curious if you have changed rod bearings, or swapped an engine. If so please share which vehicle, and how much of your time it took. With help, without help? Garage tools or pro shop?

These forums and threads lose all value when we don’t share real, technical knowledge. This isn’t a place for philosophical streams of dialogue. It helps no one to throw out random options that aren’t backed by experience or fact.

An “engine swap” for a simple 4 cylinder Japanese 1990s vehicle with two average mechanics can be accomplished in about 2 days, or 16-20 hours of labor. A 3rd gen Tacoma engine replacement will consume at least 25-30 hours.

As a community we screwed up on helping this OP. Our responses should have been, “please get a diagnoses from the dealer and post a photo, we’ll offer solutions from there.”

The 2nd gen guys are much better at sticking to tech and experience. We need to get away from 10 pages of conjecture.

    About sums it up haha.

First, she needs to inspect the rotator splint for a possible repair....

What are you talking about? I'm enjoying watching the guy punching at air trying to use 250K as a mileage benchmark for the 3.5L in an application it has only been in for 5 years. That would equal 50k miles per year since the 3rd gen came out. I drive A LOT and I only get about 28k per year.

My mentioning of 8 hours was in regards to rod bearings NOT an engine swap however 8 hrs is how long it took to get my very own 1st gen tacos engine swapped by a shop in VA.

He called it a piston rod bearing. Its pretty safe to say he has never changed one.

Like others said earlier. I hope they assist in one way or another. You could go to a Garage and get not only a 2nd opinion but finding a low mileage engine in the bone yard. Much cheaper than new or rebuilt. Good luck & let us know what happens.

My 2018 had a motor failure too. I’m going through the warranty process right now. I’ve been out of the truck for about 3 weeks now and they are finally sending an inspector this week to give the okay
