Read through most if not all of this thread.

I'd like to add my experience.

I bought a brand new 2021 SR5 Access Cab NON _4 wheel drive Tacoma back in December of 2020. I started noticing when braking my truck would judder so I took it in about two months later in Feb or March of 21 and was told my rear rotors where warped. They fixed it and it seemed fixed.

Fast forward a few months later as traffic in my area got more congested due to people going back to work from Covid, I noticed my truck would judder with or without the brakes applied between the speed of 30MPH down to 15MPH.

Today I just got it out of the shop after it being there for 11 days straight. They did multiple measurements at one point told me that they needed to replace the left rear axel and measure more. Then it turned into we will take the driveshaft off a brand new one in the lot put it on yours and see if that works. It didn't and ultimately the end fix was brand new leaf springs. So far so good for me. "knock on wood"

I was told that during the production of my truck it did not meet the "cut-off" to get these newly engineered leaf springs for being now put on all Tacoma's moving forward.

My two cents, more than happy to help anyone with the same issue. It drove me crazy!

Frequency goes up with speed. When I was at 25mph you could make out the cycle of noise, but when going faster it sounds exactly like the TRD sport video

That's what I said earlier in this post. If it doesn't change tone with increased speed then it isn't from anything that is rotating like axles, brakes, transmissions, driveshafts.... It could very easily be a static vibration that doesn't get loud enough to hear over the drivetrain until it hits the proper resonance conditions.

Listened to that video, I’ve owed a few Tacoma's. My 2016, 2019 & current 2021 have all made the same sounds around 2300 rpm’s. Checked U- joints, carrier bearing, ect. Never found it, lol.

As someone else has mentioned, HVAC systems are a possible culprit. There’s a lot going on there, compressor, evaporator, condenser, metering device, accumulator, refrigerant, all being driven by a belt at rpm’s from the motor. I’ll try switching mine off next time and see what happens.

Make sure to bring a crowbar in case of a resonance cascade.

This doesn't explain the rough shifts and engagements

    Never said it did ?

Fyi, on the way to work (2nd shift worker) at 2200-2300 rpm’s, sound started, quickly turned off AC (not the fan). Did this 4 times, sound stopped immediately each time, was a little surprised.

Crowbars are only needed for 2nd gens…

On the other hand, being a member of this forum means putting-up with people who have one minor issue (if it is even an issue) who can’t describe it accurately and can’t even determine if it’s related to the drivetrain or HVAC

    Welcome to page 20! :D

I don't know how you can say that. Although I will admit that the possibility of a resonance cascade scenario is extremely unlikely, I remain uncomfortable...

This is likely caused by low fluid in the AT. Have you checked it...........yet??????

The "noise" is likely a separate problem. Assuming it is a problem.

OP, please quit bellyaching and excusing.....get busy to run diagnostics or take it to a dealer.

P&Ming on a forum is not moving your situation forward. You're stagnating.

This is my hiding spot, and I'm not moving until the situation is drastically improved. Now go away and don't tell anyone I'm here.

I have not read much of this thread and certainly don't intend to read all of it. I did see the 2 different videos of the noises. It sure does sound like the whistle from the lower control arms to me. It even occurs at the correct speed in the videos. There was a TSB for this in the early model third gens. The fix was to plug up the holes in the LCA's.

I don't blame you for not finding the needle in this haystack where I actually took it to a dealer. Tried to have them check the fluid, they said they would, then they didn't and marked off that they did. It was a fun time

My Brand new 1992 Toyota 4X4 Truck had a ping noise when I took off in first gear. Flange replaced on drive shaft. Head gaskets went twice. Once under warranty and once out of warranty. Toyota covered repairs both times. Loved that truck and drove it for 14 years without any other issues.

Was just able to finally purchase another Toyota truck. 2020 TRD Sport 4X4 DCLB. Truck is 9 months old with 7k miles. Have the exact same whistling noise. Makes a metallic ping like noise while turning left out of my underground parking spot when I first leave in the morning. My previous 2003 Pathfinder did the same thing. Owned it for 15 years. My 2020 has the same Transmission hunting due to engineers software trying to keep the truck in highest gear and lowest RPM’s. Sucks in city driving. However, I pushed it hard through the local mountains in “S” mode and performed beyond my expectations. Flat highway driving was a pleasure using dynamic radar cruse control. Seating position is weird due to the factory high ground clearance and squished cab. I still love this truck despite some of it’s known quirks. Plan to keep it for a long time like my previous vehicles.

    Yes it’s not perfect.

However, for your sanity you may not be a good match for this Truck and it’s quirks.

IMHO, either sell it and cut your losses or get used to the quirks and move on with your life.

There was a recall for the v6 3.0 those years for head gasket replacements. I was notified by my dealer to have the them replaced on my 93 even though i had no issues. Took them about 6 hrs to do them.

That was during Toyota's "We could care less about head gasket days" I had a '89 MK3 Supra Turbo that blew its head gasket twice and a friend had a '93 All-trac Celica that blew it's head gasket as well.
