    So, in order to avoid a firesale they can basically get a loan (interest bearing I hope) to meet the margin requirements. Isn't that like getting a loan from a loan shark to pay off the loan shark?

    This "Loan" doesn't exist in reality.
    They leverage 10x holdings for debt.
    They MAYBE have 1/10th the assets to cover their liabilities.
    The short to cover price isn't the price the stock is now...it's whatever moon price develops when they start buying millions of shares at market to cover their short positions...and it goes up and up...They're bankrupt.
