Basically flat bar stock with cutting edges on both sides, after the edge wears down, remove and flip blades for the other new cutting edge.

Sand blades have zero lift, I get about 20 to 26hrs on one side before I have to flip them over, hours vary on how dry the ground is and blade height setting.

Have you ever used Marbain blades? I've heard they are ultra durable.

@FlyingWolfe , I'm curious to know how you make out being I'll have a similar number of post holes to dig. What machine are you using it with and what kind of ground? I've got a Kubota BX23S, and I'll be battling clay and boulders. Not having high hydraulic flow or a lot of down pressure, I hear that taking it slow and steady wins the race. If all goes well for you guys, I may have to see if the local rental place has one available. If not, I'll just use the backhoe. Interestingly, to me anyways, I was told by a local contractor that for fence posts in clay, they don't cement them in, as the first just pops the concrete out of the ground.

Anyways, looking forward to your feedback. And hope your flight training is going well. I haven't checked in on the aviation thread in awhile.

No, but they only cost a few dollars more, worth a try, I saved a set in my cart for a future purchase.

Well, my little $100 New Holland had a "slight" vibration, a belt eating vibration... Let's get the work up to me.
    KIMG1554.jpg

Ah! Might be something going on here...KIMG1555.jpg

Going to need some help from Mr Miller.
    KIMG1557.jpg

Housing looks a bit rough too, let's compare...KIMG1556.jpg

I have an embarrassing amount of money in this yard sale tractor -- Messicks better send me a Christmas card!

It's back together and the lawn is mowed -- raised the property value from "abandoned" to "poorly maintained" in 2-1/2 hours.

Cast aluminum I believe, didn't really study it closely. Very light.

I think you guys are talking about 2 different things.

The deck she'll is stamped steel and the spindle housing is aluminum.

    Amicorect?

I think you'll find the Maple Grove prices are below what you'll get on Amazon and shipping costs are very reasonable. Give me something you want me to look up and I'll check the catalog price so you can compare.

I don't know how difficult it is to open a new commercial acct. They let the previous holder transfer it to my dad since the guy was getting out of the lawn mower repair business.

I will say my dad buys probably less than $750 in parts in a year because he just repairs stuff for friends and a few "by word of mouth" drop ins. He's 86 yrs old. So IF they have a minimum to maintain commercial status, it's pretty low.

Amen brother! I have a long history of buying cheap things "to fix up" and promptly burying myself in them.

This was $100 at a yard sale, it had been a mower at a tenant house and it seems the tenants kid had a hissy and slashed the tires so it sat in a garage for years. 4 tires, battery, fluids and filters got it running nice.

Then I dug a money pit with the deck - the blades had been loose and spun on the spindles, idlers were shot, belt was worn 1/2 size. Turned out the spindles were bent too.
2 belts - shredded the first new one in about 10 hours
2 idlers -- damn, they were proud of them!
    3 spindles
    6 bearings - twice...
    1 housing
all the blade nuts and washers
    new blades - surprisingly cheap

Damn thing better last another 20 years now!

One of the reasons I got rid of the Wheelhorse version of your NH is the parts cost. The spindles for that thing were ridiculous and you had to buy it in pieces and assemble it. I had $100+ in one spindle and that was reusing the bearings out of the old one.

At least the parts are easily available. Messicks has had everything in stock, on my porch next day standard shipping. With everything I have replaced on the deck it should be good for a long time now.

I actually really like this little guy, it is quite zippy for a single cylinder job and is handy to use. My old Ford/Jacobsens had the same style foot control hydro which makes sense to operate.

I had (2) JDs and still have a AYP/Craftsman with the hydro on the fender which I feel is about the silliest idea of the week -- p-i-a.

Thanks. Pot metal would have been double terrible. Aluminum is not the best choice for carrying bearings for this but exotic alloys too expensive and steel, maybe too heavy.

Typically residential grade mowers have aluminum spindle housings, commercial units have iron. The mower is over 20 years old and had a rough life so I can't fault the aluminum unit for failing.

I am amazed at how big of a mess I can make of my shop in such a short time.

I swapped out a pto clutch last night.

    2 hammers.
2 3/8 socket sets and cordless driver.
Grease gun, greasy rags, boxes that the clutch came in.
    Jack stands and jack.
    End wrenches as well.
I can't figure it out. The clutch is held on by 1, 5/8" bolt and 1, 9/16" bolt. Why did I have so many tools out?!

Guys at work do that so the boss thinks it is a bigger job than it really is.
We do it to ourselves because --- well, I don't actually know...:anonymous: We just do it. :notsure:
