Rust protection electric module

Hi All
Just ordered a new truck. Wondering if this is worth adding from the dealer before I pickup truck. Seeing mixed reviews online. Also dealer wants close to $2000 installed. Any better deals out there or other methods to rust proof? I live in the North with a fair amount of snow.

$2k is a rip for install - couple electrical connections and bolts.

IMO spray everything with Rustoleum paint - flat black is nice - then cover with your favorite creep coating (fluid film etc). This way if you get lazy and 'forget' to reapply the creep coating the Rustoleum has you covered.

 

Cosmoline

 

Yes. Fluid Film and Woolwax are lanolin based undercoating. Woolwax is a thicker version of Fluid Film so it resists being sprayed off better. These are not like the rubberized undercoating that more or less rots your frame from the inside out by sealing in moisture.

 

$2K is a massive rip-off; lots available for <$250, and installation takes maybe ten minutes... fifteen if there's beer involved. I had one on a couple of previous trucks, and IMO, they do work... to a point. They will do okay on the main body, they provide little benefit to the doors and other components which have a limited electrical path, and they are also a battery drain. While it's a bit messier, especially if you live in a high salt-use area, the Fluid Film / Woolwax is a MUCH more effective solution.

While we at TW normally advocate spending tons of money on our trucks -- $2000 ! -- politely decline.

They are selling you a plastic box or 3 with a couple of flashing LED lights on it (to let you know it is "working").

The "installation" is a ring connector to the positive terminal and a ground, round out the install with a few zip screws and some wire ties, 10-15 minutes if you are slow. If you want to try one you can pick it up on Amazon for +/- $150. Don't waste your money though, they don't do anything. (IMHO)

Buy a case of Cosmoline RP-342, even if you pay someone to do a very comprehensive job you won't spend $300 and you will have real protection that works.

Krown is good. Heaps better than nothing.

 

Jesus, 2k, dealers are fucking scumbags.

Since your truck is brand new and (if) you don't want to apply it yourself, your best bet is to go to krown within a few months of purchasing - they offer corrosion free warranty if you get your vehicle undercoated once a year with them. I live in a salt heavy area so this is a no brainer each year anyways.

I've used Krown in the past, now I just coat it myself with CRC rust inhibitor, it's basically the same stuff they use.

Up to you bud, my trucks under warranty still and I did my own lift. I think if you know you want it lifted, as time goes on in the first few months of ownership you might see other options you want. Especially if you hang around this forum long enough.

There is obviously a plus with having the dealer install and inevitably be on the hook if something goes wrong...but if things are installed and maintained correctly, they become irrelevant. The dealer can't/shouldn't void any warranty claims outside of an effected area...ie; if your AC compressor dies in the first week they can't blame the cause for you installing a lift lol

General consensus...try to avoid the dealer if it's not necessary

 

Lots of people swear by Krown but it is far from the best. There are a few comparison videos out there that demonstrate this as well. If it is truly new, this would likely be the best time to go after it with a cosmoline type product as there would be little to no contaminants or rust started yet.

I used this for undercoat on my new SR-5, I have done fluid film but it never dries and comes off over the winter....I liked this stuff.

 

CRC is legit. Have a couple cans floating around. Don't even live in the rust belt

 

I don’t have a hoist so do you just get under there with a mask on and go to town with the spray cans? Thanks
