Toyota installed an aftermarket lift kit from amazon instead of TRD on ordered truck.

So, OP got hosed. This is another reason why I never trust dealers and I love bargaining with them and catching them in the act.

Just wait til the end of the lease. Most leases have a mileage limit, right? Say this is 12,000 per year. So in three years OP will roll in to deliver the truck with 35,000 miles. Then the dealer will say it has larger tires that calculate actual miles driven to be 37,555 and charge him 20 cents per mile over... $311.00. Not too bad, I guess. ;)

This why i invested in the knowldge of TW and tools. To avoid shit like this so i could just go to delaership buy a basic truck and and make it exactly how i want it. No more "we wont touch it bullshit" Ill touch it all i want because "I know more than you jackass" :duh:

" I ordered a new 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road with lift kit, running boards, and tires. The build online shows a TRD branded lift kit with a new grill, millimeter wave sensor, and new shocks; which is the Toyota TRD Lift Kit. I went to pick up the truck and it was raining. The next day I noticed my TSS was not functioning right and realized that I still had the factory grill on the vehicle. I called the dealership thinking the mechanic or someone kept my lift kit's grill to sell on ebay or something. Come to find out they are claiming that they don't put on the Toyota TRD parts, just the aftermarket kits......"

What he built on line vs what was supplied/ordered however the verbiage the OP signed for it. IMO the new car excitement clouded their judgement and now is expecting the dealer to fix a non existing problem.

It really does suck for OP. Just a live and learn as so many people have already stated. The truck looks nice. Get the TSS figured out and just enjoy the truck. I'm figuring that since it's a lease he's not going to be doing any hardcore offroading. That's just a disaster waiting to happen, if so, lol. So yeah, spacer lift will be fine on the pavement and forest service roads and such. And in three years can move on to another vehicle.

$50/mo for the duration of the lease for a spacer lift that probably cost $150 on the market? Oof.

Well if the lift kit part number on the build order matches the Toyota lift kit part number and it wasn’t installed that to me is an issue. That’s why the OP needs to clarify.

OP look at the bright side. At least you arent the guy I saw last week on here that ordered a DCLB but signed for a DCSB. Claiming the dealer forced him to take delivery on it even though it wasnt what he ordered. Whole thing sounded like a crock of sh*t but I got a good kick out of it.

Nothing posted. Sounds like he had something that simply says "We Owe: lift kit, running boards..." without specific manufacturers/parts listed.

I mean you signed a contract so not sure what your getting at....Simply dont sign? Your signature is agreeing to terms and conditions and that you are accepting the vehicle as is.

Do you not check out a vehicle before you buy one? "Nah lets go do the financing and give you my down payment before I even put eyes on the thing" said no one ever.

Honestly, this is a good read for both my young adult kids to grasp the reality of how life really is out there, and that dad isn't just being an overly protective know it all smartass all the time.

Dad (me) has learned a lot over the years, dad coaches kids, dad hopes kids make solid informed decisions whether dad agrees with the choice or not. It is ultimately their decision, and I don't want them to just "settle for" or be "taken" by a fast talking salesman.

I don't trust dealers at face value, never have never will. Even in 1992 when I was buying my first vehicle dealer sold vehicle (used 1985 Toy XtraCab 4x4) , I worked the salesman, sales manager and finance manager so hard they were all happy to see me leave. I got my truck for EXACTLY what I went in there to buy it for (4hrs later). I've since purchase to more new Tacomas from the same dealership.

The OP could have done several things differently to avoid this situation, but without solid advise from a parent or close friend and personal reserarch, the OP gets to learn the hard way. What happens from here is completely up to the OP and how they decide to tackle it.

Good luck, OP. I wish you the best in sorting this out.

The most basic problem here is that a build sheet submitted to the dealership isn’t a promise by the dealership in any way.

I still think are some options to pursue here that may be fruitful. I think it’d be fair if the dealership removed the lift and refunded whatever the negotiated lift value was, if that can be gleaned from the paperwork. Or else charge the OP the difference between what he paid for the lift, and the normally advertised retail value of the TRD lift kit, and install it. I’m not saying either thing will happen, but those are the options I’d be pursuing if it was me. And I’d absolutely be asking the dealership and Toyota why I’m leasing a vehicle with a malfunctioning safety system. OP, if you’re not already talking to the dealership owner, you should be by now. And if it’s a dealership group, the group owner.

Yeah that is a tough pill to swallow if that is the case (and usually is).

So one key takeaway from this thread is do not mod leased vehicles. If you do make sure the part numbers of the parts are what is listed in the contract.

99% of the people who will see your truck at the grocery store will not be able to distinguish Toyota genuine from aftermarket parts.

Get the TSS fixed, drive and enjoy your truck, and hope gen 4 is out by the time you turn in your lease.

There is a lot of terrible advice and general old man grousing in this thread. OP pragmatically you have 4 options.

    1) Live with it
    2) Sell it
    3) Take them to small claims court. It’s cheap and you don’t need a lawyer. Get the other dealer to put in writing it’s unsafe and quote you to uninstall it. Sue for the amount of the uninstall and what you paid for the lift and offer to give the parts back to the original dealer. The dealer will likely settle before you go to court but worst case you spend a few hours in a court house. You might lose of course but going to court is good life experience and I think you’d have a reasonable case.
    4) Print out a banner that says “I got scammed by XYZ dealership” and hang it on your tailgate. Park your truck in front of their dealership (on a public street) for a couple days and drive around with it. Sounds stupid but the bad publicity is likely to make them just pay you to go away.
