Mine is in the shop right now for the AC leak. It will be noticed as I got a new 2021 stock Tacoma to use as a loaner and man does it drive lame even with the ECT on. I can see them under the driver's side looking for the pedal Commander or Sprint Booster. Seeing none they will know something has been done which has absolutely nothing to do with the AC leaking water inside. It did that at the end of last summer to the point it wasn't hot enough anymore to make it happen. So I had to wait until this year to get it looked at. Fingers crossed.

Which tune did you get? How is your truck set up? I was less than blown away also but there seem to be many factors that could affect it. Altitude could also be a factor. I want to go back to MGMSangTaco and try the LT tip since I'm currently on the SLT.

I’m in the same boat as you and gilly33 but I’m chalking it up to the fact I’m not pressing the engine too hard since it’s a brand new motor. Once I put it over 1,000 miles I’ll dial up the RPM’s and give it a reevaluation. Also, I’m not on the most updated file so perhaps there has been some tweaks

I drove 29k on stock tune. Had kdmax done week ago. There is a big difference in shifting and a little difference in pep. Those that have only driven 1000 miles on brand new truck are not going to notice a change.
Shifting is now almost always in the right gear. No more fighting between converter lockup or shift down or both when going up hills. It just does it correctly as it should have been from Toyota. I find myself now leaving it in drive instead of instinctively going to s4 upon startup.
    Awesome work kdmax dudes.

How does tire size selection change the tunes? Will be upgrading to 33in soon. Currently running SLT, wonder with the additional weight should I run 33 SLT, or 33 LT, Stock size LT, or keep Stock size SLT.

I was told the tune was already set up for up to 33s. Only if ur going with 35s would an adjustment need to be made

I think I know the answer but will ask anyway: should I be running 87 octane gas or greater?

You can run 87. But if you want the best mileage and the best performance, run Premium or at least mid grade 89.
I run 93 octane. When I have ran 87 in the past, I can tell a difference. It is not much, but Premium is better.

This is for anyone who had a Sprint Booster and replaced it with a KDMAX6 tune. I'm curious for a comparison to the regular, LT and SLT tip vs. SB Sport mode, or SB Race Mode. I'm leaning towards the LT but curious how these are in comparison. TIA!

If you are coming from a Sprint Booster, you will probably want the most aggressive throttle--the Regular KDMax, not the LT, SLT, nor WifeTip.

Thanks! "coming from SB" is a bit of a stretch since I only used it for a few hundred miles, but I did like the responsiveness. I realized that quicker accelleration doesn't fix the nagging shifting so I quickly requested an RMA. KDMAX up next.

I skimmed this thread but I'm still kind of confused on all this. If anyone could clear up a few things for me I'd appreciate it.

My truck is stock although I did go up one size on the tires (my snow tires are stock size though). I also had one of the ECU TSBs done a couple years back. I'd have to check to see if I can find which one.

    1. I was following the OV tune for a bit a couple years ago, but I was never $700 worth unhappy with the truck. I'm not sure how pricing for the KDMax works, but sounds like it would be cheaper and even more so if someone does the tune and I don't have to buy any hardware. Is that correct?
    2. I thought I read that KDMax is somehow based on OV tune. Is that correct? If so, how? I mean, is it legit to hack their tune? Or am I off base there and this is totally different?
    3. After I get it tuned, am I good to go for the next 10 years or will I need to have future updates installed? What if bugs are found?
    4. I'm not really clear on the various throttle options. What does "aggressive" mean? What is "light tip in"? I'm not looking for a hot rod truck, but some of the hesitation and lurching is annoying so I'd be happy to see that gone. I never had issues with gear hunting though.
    5. The acceleration at times is inconsistent. I know the torque kicks in at a higher RPM, but sometimes it's real sluggish and then suddenly hauls ass. Is that the kind of thing that is fixed with the tune?
    6. The consensus seems to be that MPG isn't really any worse. I usually get 21-22 mpg / tank (calculated, not the computer) with a mix of city and highway (65-70mph not interstate). If I drive the same way can I expect more or less the same gas mileage?
    7. If there are future TSBs for the ECU do I ignore them as it would overwrite the KDMax or is the tune for just like some part of ECU and you would still need to have it factory updated?
Sorry for all the questions. I've been trying to find the answers but nothing I found really cleared any of this up.

    Thanks.

Jim you can contact - Adam @MGMSangTaco- Denver Colorado 617-259-0077 he can get you taken care of and answer anymore questions you might have.

1.The price is $350 to $400 depending on tuner and loaction. Comes with free ECU update with tune purchase.
2.The KDMax tunes are built using ovtune/vftuner platfom fully licensed Pro tuner.
3.Once the tune is installed you are good to go.If there are any future upgrades you can contact your tuner for details. If you have any issue with your tune your installer should be notified and any corrections needed he will addressed. We will make it right!
4.We have 4 throttle settings to choose from.Your tuner can help you choose what is best for your driving habits and truck.

    -Regular- Aggressive throttle, linear throttle
-LT- Reduced by 10% on gears 1-3, the rest same as Regular
-SLT- Reduced by 10% more on gears 1-3, the rest the same as Regular
-WifeTip- Very light, like stock throttle on gears 1-6

    Manual transmission
    -XT- Aggressive throttle
-Regular- More throttle in all gears than stock, but lighter than XT

5.The tune will give you smooth predictable throttle and smooth predictable shifting.
6.We don't guarantee better MPG's most all report back improved MPG's anywhere from 1.5 to 3 MPG. Your driving habits and truck mods will dictate your MPG's.
7.If for some reason your tune is overwritten by the dealer your tuner will flash your tune back. Future TSB/ECU updates can be updated contact your tuner to see if they apply to your truck.

I think JDKred is here in UT. Due to elevation our mid grade is 87/88, premium tops at 91. Elsewhere in the country at lower elevation, 91 is more mid grade

For this reason, I tend to recommend my customers run Reg fuel tunes. Yes there are some gains on the Premium tunes, but we will be on the bottom end of that. We also have gas stations in the hills around here where 88 is the highest you can get.

The regular tunes can learn up to 90 octane, so you can get some added performance running 91. And you can safely run 85/87/88 if you have to. If we had access to 93 and 91 was more mid grade I’d be more inclined to recommend more Premium tunes, but we don’t.

    Just my $0.02 on it.

You should be good to go then. Even the regular fuel tunes have timing advanced from stock, just not near as much as the premium tunes. The trucks knock correction will also step in a pull timing as needed if you run 85. However, when this happens you are leaving performance on the table. I recommend 87/88 on the regular tunes if you can swing it. Fill with 91 if you want/need more performance for a given drive/activity.
