Good info but you’ll gain nowhere near 30hp swapping to an electric fan. Both a mechanical and an electric fan cause parasitic losses, the electric due to the high current draw from the alternator. From what I’ve read the mechanical fan suffers from losses due to the clutch which never fully disengages. 4-5 hp gain with electric seems to be more realistic.

I seem to remember reading somewhere on TW that the TSB does not apply to manual transmissions.

My 2000 Tacoma is a manual so when I came across a 17 the the same I nabbed it.

My grandfather, grandmother and I along with their dog Sandie all used to pile up in his old single cab Toyota and head up to the mountains where he was in the process of building our families house. I was probably 5 years old maybe a little less. I’ll never forget the way he shifted that old truck and the smell of the gas and oil of that little 4cylinder climbing those hills in northeast PA. Exactly why I wanted a 4cylinder manual and will never sell it. He was an airline mechanic for US Air at Newark airport and always smelled like jet fuel and kerosine. I’ll never forget those trips. Best time of my life.

There's one aspect of an automatic that's a show stopper for me, unless recent designs have gotten significantly better. In congested freeway driving one frequently comes upon slower traffic in the same lane. Because of the amount of traffic, a gap in the lane to the left is infrequent. When a gap does appear the engine needs to be at maximum rpm for acceleration, typically 2nd or 3rd gear. Automatic transmissions are terrible at shifting from top gear to 2nd or 3rd, it's like ringing down to the engine room on a battleship. A manual is much faster shifting from top gear to an appropriate acceleration gear. When commuting I typically encounter this scenario once or twice, and doing so with an automatic is an exercise in patience.

Have recent automatics resolved this deficiency?

    An interesting observation.

I have driven some vehicles in the past that were reluctant to downshift but for the most part an automatic can shift down or up faster than any person.

Granted most of my vehicles have been older but for the most part I have never observed any delay when I put my boot in it.

However modern programming wants to keep the tx in the highest gear possible for economy.

In what vehicles have you observed this reluctance to downshift situation?

I was gonna get an auto until I did more research and found out MT has a better gear ratio. Never regret it.

I've observed this in rental cars, recent BMW loaners and an e92 M3 with DCT I used to have. Everything I've tried, which isn't exhaustive, has a big delay from 6th/7th to 2nd/3rd. No question modern automatics are much faster in almost all other scenarios, just curious if this situation has been cracked.

AT can downshift to 4th from 6th or 5th at any speed in a split second by simply flick the stick. Faster than your arthritic wrist can row the stick...

Total time from 6th to 2nd please? No cheating by stomping on the accelerator before it is 2nd/3rd gear.

I guess I'm showing my age here, all my automatics are 3 or 4 speed units. I have never even sat in a car with a 6 or 7 speed. :anonymous:

There is no gear lock on AT, so this is not a possible conditions. AT downshifts based on speed, throttle and torque request. Find a better "comparisons". Been playing "checkers in heavy traffic without any issues for many years

The appropriate way to address this situation, in either transmission, is to downshift before the gap in the lane arrives, since it doesn't just appear out of thin air. You watch it approach, presumably. So downshift, then accelerate into the left lane, then shift.

That said, it's better in a manual because you can rev match. Hammering the throttle in drive in an automatic is a poorly designed roller coaster where you're jerked back, then forward, then back, as the car tries to accelerate, then realizes it needs to downshift so it nosedives, then delivers power really accelerating. Granted my last auto was an 03 v8 T4R, so I assume technology is better now.

You should try to drive tuned AT. Pretty smooth downshift to 4th while the foot on the pedal. RPMs rise up to 3500 and she takes of like a mad dog. Don't need to downshift lower.

Specifically a Tacoma, or any vehicle with a decent AT? Because I have actually driven some very good autos, I just personally have no interest in them. I'm driving this until either the wheels fall off or my knee does, and my next vehicle won't have a transmission at all.

I’d like a manual just to mess around with Clutch Start Cancel.

    All these answers are great.
People ask me why not Automatic?

    My response is always simple
“You must not have ever driven a manual.” “If you did you wouldn’t need to ask!”

    I can ramble on with….

    100% control!

    My first car was manual.

My first Toyota truck was manual.

I had 2 automatic Tacomas and missed driving manual.

    No gear hunting transmission!

Drunk friends can’t drive my truck home from the bar!

Having a valet ask you to park the vehicle yourself.

    Millennial theft protection!

    My wife won’t learn stick.

Friends can’t borrow the truck because they can’t drive manual.

Daughter won’t borrow my truck because she’s scared to scratch it(wrong one)

    Daughter won’t learn manual!

    it’s fun!
