The ratcheting wrenches are great for tight places, of course. I have a flat cheap set that I use more than anything, besides breaking stuff loose, I always think I'll strip (break) the ratchet end out

So I hate shortening bolts because it’s never quite as easy to thread a nut on. I
Even if you thread the nut in first, make the cut, and back the bolt off to clean up the threads, it’s still not great. I got this deburring tool to give it a shot.

I did a worst case scenario test run and it worked like a charm. Under normal conditions where ray Charles isn’t doing the cutting it won’t turn the bolt into as much if a cone.

The nut threaded on by hand with ease.

No offense but that looks horrible. Screw nut on the bolt, Cut to length with hacksaw, clean up the threads with a file a bit then take the nut off the bolt. Or use a tap and die set, put the nut on first though. If its something you wont see ever again i guess thats fine but im super OCD lol

He did a worse case with it. If u cut a bolt square and then use this tool it does a decent job if u don’t yeet the shit out of the drill

What he said, which is what I wrote if you’d have read the whole post. I agree it looks like shit, I just wanted to see if it would work.

Here’s what it would look like under normal usage. Square cut and cleaned up with the tool.

That’s a lot easier than what I’ve done in the past which is making a cut then getting a small detail file and cleaning up the first part of the thread.

I was never that patient so I just avoided trimming bolts at all costs. This tool definitely seems like it’ll come in handy.

    A thing or two...
It's great if it works for you, but I've never had a problem with a hacksaw/dremel and a file. I don't even put on a nut before cutting. :notsure:

Picked this up at a local thrift store for $14. Its in very good shape. No crack, rust, splits in the wood or anything. I need to clean it up and see if i can fine the correct saw for this but think anything newer would work?

there should never be a problem as long as it’s cut straight. I put a nut on for extra insurance if I remember but I’ve never had an issue. The problems with little tools like that is I never remember where I put them.

there’s really no need to kill the power as long as you know what you’re doing. I’ve worked equipment live up to 480VAC with proper precautions. Use insulated tools and you’ll be fine.

Yes! Nice to know it isn't just me.

First use: Boy, this is handy, I'll put it right here in the _____ so I know where it is next time
Next use: Where the heck did I put that
Much later: Now I remember why I put it here
Next use: Where the ... :annoyed:

I have a few of their sets, sorta pricey but really well built. Mine have taken a beating over the years for sure. I do still keep a cheap set of tools around if I really need to beat on something though.
I'd choose them over Snap-on, but that's personal preference.

I agree, but public forum and all.

    People, cut the power.

But if your tools are known to be insulated and you have done such things many times, yep. My dad was an electrician. He had stories like drilling and tapping and connecting to a hot HV buss. Wowser!

for sure! Whenever possible kill the feeder to the line you’re servicing. In some applications this isn’t cost effective or feasible, thus you’re stuck working it hot. I would surmise you won’t run into that in most residential applications.

Trying to organize this drawer - no cases just new shadow boxes. Might have to rethink the layout.
