I have a '21 SR 4x4 AC 2.7L and it is fine in town and in the interstate (like 0-50ish pulling out into traffic or getting up to 75-80 MPH by the end of a merge ramp). Even on longer grades on the interstate I can just slap it over into 4th gear and it pulls up them fine at 3000 RPM like an old naturally aspirated diesel. I just drove it 2000 miles and got 21-22 MPG at 75-80 MPH and did one tank at 26.9 MPG at 55-60 MPH. So the 4-cylinder does have some benefits.

The one place it feels pretty lacking is on hilly back roads at 55-60 MPH. On flat roads it can loaf along in 6th gear and gets great mileage, but in the hills, in 5th and 6th gears it is revving so low at those speeds that it always kicks down to 4th to get up the hill, so normally I just put it in 4th until the road levels out. I wish 4th gear was shorter/closer to 3rd (not as much of a rev drop) with 5th being the 1:1 gear (same as the current 4th) and 6th the same tall overdrive. Then I would have better low-speed power, a good ratio for hills (1:1 5th) and a tall 6th for flat land/good MPG.

I do feel like it would be a lot quicker/less annoying with a manual transmission or if the manual mode was a true manual mode where you could floor it in gear and not get a 5000 RPM kickdown to 2nd. Most of the time I really like the automatic (in traffic) but there are one or two times a day I wish this was a stick shift. This is my first automatic since I started driving in 1995 and it would be nice to be able to cruise around in 4th gear and lean on the throttle -- up to full throttle -- to pull a grade with torque instead riding right at the limit of getting a high-RPM kickdown.

    Love my 2.7 dcsb.
Sure it was slow af when I bought it.

    lce headers
    Air raid air intake
    Volant air induction kit

    magnaflow exhaust

    Amp’d Throttle booster.

Get about 30mpg with throttle booster set to Valet @ -50% (Gas is way to expensive, hence the setting)

I can also switch the setting to +400% and get maximum quickness in. But then again I can gradually see my fuel spindle go down.

    I’m 6’3 and fit like a glove.

Take those heavy ass Steelies off your truck and switch to a lighter wheel and it will do more than all of those mods you wasted your money on.

I think I read somewhere the 2.7 is good for up to 5000lbs towing in other vehicles.

I wondered about the weight of the steel wheels, haven't been able to find a figure though. From threads I’ve read here the LCE header for the 2.7 has real torque and power gains, I’ve seen several dyno charts done by TW members to show it, so not a waste of money.

Well good luck over there man! Depending on how long you’ll be there might want to consider a cheaper used vehicle and get your dream truck when you get back to the states.

My dream truck is a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab. Painted bright yellow with bull bars and tube steps, large tires and a loud exhaust.

Good thing I grew up though. Lol

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
I believe the proper expression is: "Doesn't have enough power to pull a rubber off a limp d*ck."

Sounds like you’re talking from experience, best you stick with a V6 then or better yet go get a truck with a turbo or V8

I wasn't aware that the 2.7 crowd was so enthusiastic about having 159 screaming horses.

I'm gonna guess you guys use hand saws rather than a Skilsaw too, because they've got a great reliability record

Eh, it's fine/enough for me. I wouldn't own this if I lived in Colorado but it is fine here in TX. In my opinion, neither of the Tacoma's engines could be considered quick. The V6 does 0-60 in about 8 seconds while the 4-cylinder does it in 11 and can maintain speed up hills, even if requires a downshift or two. It might not be able to do quick pass on a 2-lane road uphill, but I grew up with things like Isuzu Troopers that took 20 seconds to do 0-60 and couldn't maintain speed on gradual inclines on the interstate or '88 4Runner V6s that took 13-14 and this feels fine to me in comparison.

I wanted a new 4x4 truck and getting the 2.7 saved almost $3k compared to the V6 and allowed me to get a nice camper shell and some other stuff I wouldn't have been able to justify otherwise.

Just to add to the conversation...
I have the 2.7 and steel wheels. I'm not in first place, but I do reach the finish line. The thing about steelies is that if I thump a rock too hard & bend one, I can usually straighten it back out with a hammer. No one can trail-fix a busted alloy wheel. (The rocks are real here in Colo.)
I run 255/85R16 which are taller than stock and the truck does great! (No lift, no rub, no problems at all!)

For the original price ($23k), the ok fuel mileage, and absolutely the reliability, I am totally happy that I own the 2.7 w/ MT.

If we wanted HP we'd have gotten a V8 Tundra but I wanted reliability and fuel economy with a usable pickup bed, plus a little fun which my Taco is loads of fun. I don't drive with a lead foot so it suits me.

Well, i just did another 50 mile trip into town with my v6 sr5 hauling a bunch of outdoor furniture to my brothers house...23.2 mpg. It just cruises so effortlessly at 55-60 mph mostly around 1500 rpm.
