2012 Tacoma prerunner radio upgrade

Hey everybody I'm new here. Well mostly I've been coming here to read on everybody's experiences with their tacos. I recently got my first tacoma almost 5 months ago. I have installed a 3 inch lift with 275/60/20 goodyear wrangler adventures with kevlar tires and am loving the ride so far. Now i will say I've gotten some backlash from others because its the 2.7l and 2wd but I started out offroading (mostly mudding) with a 2wd so I know what I can do with a good set of tires. Little background is over and now my question to y'all is can i put in a factory touch screen radio?? I have the base model radio with the stupid headliner rear tweeter but I'll install rear door speakers later. If anybody out there has one they'd be willing to part with I'd appreciate it as well! Thanks in advance!

 

If going through the trouble of replacing head unit, just go aftermarket.

 

@ace96 I have thought about it and done a ton of looking but I'm just too picky for the price of aftermarket. I've had several double din radios before on the $400 or less side and was never really that happy with them.

 

I would also consider siding with Ace96. I recently had my 2013 factory touch screen go bad. I really wanted to stay factory, and fought it for a long time, but I finally decided to go aftermarket.

I’m super happy with my decision now. Major change in sound quality after getting the EQ set. Wireless/wired CarPlay has been massive. Plus I got the unnecessary, yet awesome Maestro to see my tire pressures and gauges.

Granted I spent more than I planned ($700), I had a few radios in the $400 range that I was very close to buying. All the used factory touch screens I could find were $300, so I decided it was worth the extra $100 to get into aftermarket.

I totally understand wanting to stay factory, but for me I planned to keep my truck another 5 years minimum (hopefully another 10!) and it was worth it.

 

@dTed I appreciate your input! I may just look at what it would cost me from the dealer at my price though on the off chance i decide to go new or refurbished OE (forgot to mention I'm a tech at a dealership lol) but i still like to keep my options open. I've looked and seen a massive amount of different android radios, albeit on the cheaper side, which I like but they all have realpy shitty reciews unless im willing to pay at minimum $800, which I'm not. But even my preferred brands like kenwood and alpine due to the quality I've had with their outputs are a bit costly and still need jumper harnesses and such. I will say however if memphis audio or JL audio came out with a headunit I'd be more than happy to save for either of those

 

I hear ya but after changing head unit and speakers I couldn’t be happier. Big improvement in sound quality and adjustability.

 

Some good threads on here about the Dasaita head units. I got one and PowerAmp download really brought at the best in my afytermarket speakers and ********* amp. Spent a lot but have thousands of digitized albums from the 60's on. I really like my music and even put OnX maps on the system for hunting trips.

I agree with all of you. I have already upgraded the stock 6x9s to the JBL 6x9 4 way pair up front. they really brightened up the sound and made everything pretty clean and crisp at a relatively high volume (32 on base unit). I have a couple of 6.5'' skar audio subs underneath the rear flip up seats where the storage tray would be and they're powered by their 350.1 amp. couldn't be happier with the level of tone they add to it so I won't going big again. I downgraded from their evl 12 and 1500 watt rms because I like having room in the little space I have in there. Especially with a kid in a car seat as well. I've heard about t a c o t u n e s and their iffy reputation so I'm steering clear of them.
