3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

To Crash's points on HIR, I will say, of all the bulbs I've loved before, they all pale in comparison to the Toshiba HIR's I run in the Odyssey.

Now, with that said, once the Tundra lighting gets off the ground I might find a new true love with those massive reflectors. I await that possibility with glee...

From what I've read, bot past and present is that the the ACDelco HIR1 is now made by Volsa and is no longer the bubble style bulb (Toshiba). On Amazon there are a handful of reviews saying that they received a Volsa bulb in the ACDelco package, maybe it's only from a certain vendor? Maybe the Volsa is as good as the Toshiba, I don't know?

But I found this thread interesting from HIDPlanet (posted in March 2020). According to that page the "NEW" Sylvania 9011 Basic made in Korea (not Germany) is a true HIR and equals the output of the Toshiba HIR1/9011. Unfortunately the pictures are no longer available on that post. But judging off the wording it appears that the Sylvania Basic 9011 at least equals to the output of the Toshiba, might be the next best thing if the Toshiba/ACDelco's aren't available anymore for 9011/HIR1 needs.

For the ACDelcos being Volsas and not Toshibas, I believe that is if you let Amazon direct you to the 'new' cheaper ACDelco bulbs. I believe if you purchase the older more expensive ones I linked you still receive the Toshibas. Amazon combines the reviews for both since they are "the same product" even though they are really not. I believe @daveeasa ordered some from that source not that long ago and received Toshibas. But I haven't ordered recently to confirm.

As to the Sylvania 9011s, right, that is what I mentioned earlier. Problem is determining exactly what you are getting when you order, if you can confirm they are made in Korea prior to ordering then that would be a good option. But often the photos are just stock photos, and since that bulb is new and 9011/9012s are not very commonly used, chances are if ordering an unspecified Sylvania 9011s you'll likely get older stock bulbs from Germany.

 

Ahhh, that makes sense! I'll have to look at the pricing options on the ACDelco then! Going to be doing some light upgrades to my father in laws 2018 F-150 soon and the High beam takes a 9005, so naturally I am looking into 9011/HIR1. The fog light uses a 9140/H10 and from what I've seen, many on the forums just take the 9005 from the high beam and put it in the fog light. But I'm curious how much glare there is without a glare shield and no anti-glare cap on the bulb.

 

These for $31 I believe are ACDelco Toshibas, with only 9 left. Note that Amazon will try to steer you toward the newer Volsa version for $23.

I've experimented with uncapped bulbs in fogs, there is glare and the pattern isn't as defined. I wouldn't recommend that route. Instead I'd look to replace the factory fogs with some Diode Dynamics SS3 Sports in selective yellow. They are obviously more expensive, but there is periodic 15% off sales, next one likely near Labor Day.

I have bought two pairs of Toshiba HIR from this seller. Actually I think I’ve bought 3 pairs come to think of it, one for the RAM. Very satisfied with the product received.

Oh damn, checked my purchase history, I’m in for 4 pairs. I’m ridiculous.

 

Ya, I'd like him to get some SS3's....but he doesn't think it's worth the money. Even after riding in our Subaru Ascent with SS3 Pros. lol

 

In that case, there are no performance H10/9145s. I'd leave the fogs stock, or consider swapping some Nokya hyper yellow H10s. The Nokya's won't be any brighter than stock, but you'll have yellow output instead.

 

That’s what I was thinking too about the 9145’s. It’s at least a little bump over the 9140’s. I don’t think he’d go for a different color. It seems most “proper” F150 owners use H9 for low beam, 9011 or HIR1 for high beam and 9005 or 9145 for the fog. Again, I’ll try the 9005 since I’ll be taking it out anyways to see how the glare is, if I’m not happy I’ll get some 9145’s and settle with that.

Even when he has ridden in our ascent he was surprised with output but thinks the yellow fog lights look silly. He said it was better than their Forester which uses the same Kioto LED headlight projector. I tried explaining the benefits, but I don’t think he’d ever go for it because of his bias. He asked me to find some good LED’s (because LED is more of a buzz word than anything) but I told him I’ll get him some good halogens and see how he likes it. Plus he’d be spending a ton more money for no added performance. Which is ironic because he was willing to spend $300 on LEDs but doesn’t want to spend $250 for SS3’s. I explained to him why PNP LEDs don’t work in reflector housings and it just kinda went over his head. Lol I’m the mechanic of the family and he only trusts me to work on his stuff even though he has 3 sons, even one that claims he is a mechanic…. I’ll try to get him to see the light and set him up with some SS3’s at some point.

 

I ordered my AC,Delco HIR bulbs from our GMC dealership. They were cheaper than Amazon (because I get an employee discount) and were definitely Voslas. But I've been happy with them. Don't drive at night much in the summer though.

Can anyone point me in the right direction (other than Google please) for the best pricing on 2020+ factory LED headlight assemblies? Any discount codes out there to be used? Any Tacomaworld participating dealers that might offer better pricing to forum members?? Ready to pull the trigger for the new factory "look" but if there's any money to be saved, I'm ok with that

 

I just went in to my local dealership (Culver City Toyota) and asked them what the best price they could sell the lights to me was. Without any more haggling than that I think the price was about $670 per light, which was on par with the lowest prices that had been mentioned on various threads here. There was sales tax but I'd have to pay that no matter where I purchased but there was no shipping. There is also the issue of quite a few lights being received from the regional distributors with broken mounting tabs due to poor internal packing, which is something my dealer was aware of and checked before they called me telling me the lights were in. And, of course, you'll have to get the wiring harness that works for those lights, and get them properly aligned. Once you do you'll never regret any of the money you spent.

 

Can I do the H9 trick for my 2013 Camry as well? Its low beams are H11's.

 

I do it in my 2018 Odyssey. Any H11 projector can take the H9 and all the H11 connectors I've seen appear to be effectively the same connector with green center piece which can be removed easily.

 

I'd just carefully check the aim. Remember, the H9 produces more light everywhere throughout the beam. Meaning whatever amount the low beam currently allows will be increased by substituting the H9.

So I went out and took pictures of my OEM LED headlight light pattern just for that one troll. Thread got locked, and now I have pictures with nowhere to go. So thought it would be beneficial to put it here.

 

I dunno man, sure seems like the foregrounds pretty oversaturated to me/s. (2020 LED thread could also use them, in the lighting subforum.)

 

Currently have Hikari Ultra and wanting some brighter lights, what would you guys recommend for HID? OEM LED are not a option given they are $1100 + 12% tax where i live per assembly.
