Plug and Play Brake Light taps

Don't Tacoma's use SAE J2863 plugs? So wouldn't the turn and brake be combined? I always thought that was the case. @caribe makaira might know

 

Yes, the Towing Brake & Turn are combined.

 

Hmm, I wonder how my light bar figures that out. Do you think it just detects the flash signal like switchback bulbs do?

 

If the light bar is connected to the 4 pin, maybe the stop feature isn't working. Because the same row should be either off, on or flashing. Another row should be on or off ( tails). You should check the function.

 

It's connected to the 5 pin and there are three rows of lights, red, amber white. I'll get pictures, apologies for detailing the thread

 

White - reverse
Red - Stop //Bright (& maybe Tail//Dim)
Amber - Turn

 

Thanks, I just didn't realize the trailer wiring sends both brake and turn on the same wire. I think the light bar essentially has a vehicle to vehicle converter(2-3 wire conversion) built in that allows it to have all functions.

Little Review & Install notes on a Tap Harness, hope this helps.

Installation took around an hour
I started by removing the drivers side taillight.

Lock/Unlock (I have an OEM electric tailgate lock)
The connection point is under the truck not far from where the harness enters the tailgate.
I unplugged the OEM lock/ unlock connector for the tailgate actuator, installed the in-line harness & re-connected the OEM connector.

Brake Light
Unplugged the brake light connector from the taillight, installed the in-line harness & re-connected the brake light connector.

Ground Wire
There are a few place under the truck that will work that dont require drilling. I found an existing hole, sanded down to bare metal, installed the ground wire using a marine grade ring terminal, then used a nut & bolt (be sure to use loctite on the threads & also use liquid tape on the ring terminal bolt & wire end to help prevent corrosion / water intrusion)

Power Wire
Find the best path that works for you.
I ran mine in the frame rail, and away from the exhaust manifold and steering.
An inline fuse & ring terminal were installed at the battery.

Deutsch flanged connector
I installed the connector has high as possible because I always have at least 1 ladder in my truck for work, along with boxes of cable & other items.
I used a step bit & drill bit to make a hole the was close to the shape of the connector. (A hole saw will also work, I just used what I had in my tool bag)

Inserting the pins into the Deutsch Connector was very simple.

Tips & Notes:
Pre-drill the mounting holes.
Be sure to write down your pin-out & take a picture
Have someone hold a shop vac while drilling the truck bed, wear a respirator and eye protection.

If you don't already know; the truck bed is a composite material DO NOT BREATH OR GET IN YOUR EYES OR ON SKIN, it can be like working with fiberglass.

Use some pull string or wire to drop down the hole for connector, tape on the harness and be gentle when pulling.
I installed the Deutsch flanged connector thumb tab down.
Silicone was used on the Deutsch flanged connector & bed of truck to create a seal between the connector and truck bed.

The pins came pre labeled for both male & female connectors.

Some thoughts on the harness:
The blue brake light wire could be a couple of inches longer; same with the lock/unlock harness under the truck. (Not that big of a deal)
Would be awesome the the connection had a 90 degree plug.


Very happy with this harness, the LAST thing I wanted was the factory harness butchered.
This is a well built harness. I am really impressed with Johnny's workmanship; this could pass as OEM.


Now I am just waiting for my camper shell.
ARE is running close to 3 weeks behind schedule.

 

That’s a pretty good spot. I was thinking of doing it on the metal myself as I have bedside molle but I might rethink that. Yours looks very nice.

Thank you for the feedback and the pictures! I will add a little length to future builds. Always best to have a little more than needed. I looked into a 90 degree option, but they don't do it with the flanged connectors. They do however make a shell for them that does 90, so maybe that will be an option? I think your location is exactly what I have had in mind designing these. Hope to see more when the topper gets here!

Will this work for a tail light and brake light tap? I’m thinking of adding a chase light bar and it has running lights and brake lights function.

 

I can easily add a parking light tap to it, no extra charge.
