Wow. If it got that hot and no AC, our house would be broiling. Way better just outdoors under a tree.............we are situated to get as much (weak) solar warmth Oct-May as possible - which means roasting sides of the house and windows when hot. The house is well insulated........and well cools slowly when the sun goes down.

 

Hoping for some advice, please. New house has this south facing window and the top part of it has no covering. This will be my office so keeping heat and light out is important. Considering that, how would y’all deal with the odd shaped window?

Get it professional filmed. I mean you can buy the window film and DIY and it will a) save you a ton b) maybe that window, small flaws not noticeable.

Point being, the better films you will not feel the heat when light is streaming in. Yes it will cut some visible light as well, but should reflect a good portion of the IR

Film is a decent idea like stated above.

Solar screens were a relatively cheap/effective option we added to our house to help with heat.

Could put up some darkening curtains covering all of the windows. Might not help as much with heat transfer, but used in combination with the other options gives you adjustability in the amount of light throughout the day.

 

More good advice, thanks. We are probably going to do curtains in addition to the blinds on the lower window. I'll look into solar screens as well. I'm not familiar with them, though; what do I need to know before I start typing things into Google?

 

Turned a 2nd coat closet into shelved storage. 2x4s screwed to the studs and 1/2" ply for shelves. Plan is to use it to keep bulk paper goods in storage on same floor as the kitchen, cleaning supplies, and beer and water cases on the floor. And because the closet was so deep theres still room for vacuum and swiffer to stand/hang against the wall before the shelves start.

 

2x4s were a bit overkill, lol

 

Trusses delivered today , driver had to do a 100 point Austin Powers jockey to get trailer through gate at end of narrow , curved driveway , had about 2" of clearance lol

 

you must have had a lot of Truss in the driver to go into a tight area like that

 

I have a few windows with that same shape and all of my house windows are tinted. After almost 10 years they're ready for some new tint now and I'll probably have it done this fall or early spring next year. Also, any custom window blind store can fabricate something to fit that shape. Just do a google search of nearby stores. Home Depot and Lowes also have a lot of window blinds and might be able to put you contact with someone or perhaps they have someone in house who can make something.

 

Did our AC in April as a preventive measure and it was $6k for a 3 ton unit I think for a 1300 sqft town home

 

Horry sheet! Where are you located? New 2T heat pump going in right now. $14k out the door in the PNW. About 2k sq ft.

 

Got home from a week in NYC to finished tile in the master. Need to cut a hole in the ceiling where the elbow is for the rain shower head. Couple calls out to glass guys, didn't have time to get them in as soon as it was done. But it's a huge milestone in the project!

 

Ceiling to floor curtains. Apparently thats the style now.

 

Got most of our trusses standing , I think we did pretty good for 2 guys and one afternoon

Will complete bracing tomorrow , start working on gable overhangs and subfascia

 

Florida. I didn’t get. Trane or Lennox. Our AC guy installed one that is made by Carrier but rebranded. He installs them everywhere for his customers and the few that I know have had zero issues with them. Everything was installed to code, with permits and inspection.


One of the big time HVAC companies in the area quoted me 15k to do it with a carrier setup but they were going to do so much extra work that wasn’t necessary.

I helped a couple friends tint the house they were renting, and then we tinted the place I was renting when I was in NM. It made a huge difference at both places in how hot it got.
