well closing on the new house with sweet bike cave is getting pushed. even though I'm buying the home as-is with a conventional loan, they're requiring we fix a small plumbing leak (sink drain that only leaks when you use it) before allowing us to close. stupid...

shouldn't push more than a week though thankfully but I was super ready to get into my new shop..

Hey guys and gals. Get ready to throw a rock at me. And I'm still searching. This will be my first time on a mountain bike since the early 90s. Had a hardtail that took me all over Houston and then all over campus at Aggie land. New bike will be a starter to get me back into this sport. And who ya calling old? I do ride enduro too but on a wound up 2 stroke. :D

Planning a trip out to Big Bend in October....get that rock ready to throw..... Transporting this thing out west. My truck will be loaded from top to bottom. Reading about the side mounts. Found a few on here and in my search. Talk to me about stability, please. I have 20+ miles of washboard road to get to the real rocky stuff. Then it's slow and rough to camp site. Do I simply strap the thing to the roof rack and call it a day?..I KID. How do these side mounts work for those of you that use them?

    Thanks in advance!

@Nimble9 would be the expert here. He builds the things.

No rocks to be thrown to you. Now if you had said "transporting your E-bike"... :crapstorm: :D

EXCELLENT feedback and some proof to back it up. Thank you sir. Probably pulling the trigger soon...already have the front bed rail. If i go with your setup, I'll report back when I return from my trip in October.

    Thanks again folks.

PM me your order number if you end up going the SideRide Route

I've packed the truck to the gills and it's still relatively compact for longer trips.

Will do for sure! And man that thing is a beauty. Locked and loaded! Best shot I have of my last trip out west and wished we had bikes with us. My son and I hiked for miles in that wind blown canyon!! I'll be about 10 miles north east of this spot in October...2nd most remote spot in the park. Guale Mesa below being the most remote. Old wagon trail getting back up from camp was a bit sketchy in the tacoma. Paradise out there though and much to explore on 2 AND 4 wheels. :)

    Y'all have a good one.

You going to Big Bend NP, or Big Bend Ranch State Park? Been wanting to explore out there, just haven't worked out logistics and it is a long drive even for Texans. The State Park looks way bigger on the map.

Big Bend ranch State Park is paradise and they keep promising "no pavement, ever". Saucedo Ranch house is getting a makeover FY22/23, I think. And that's it. Hope it stays wild out there. They're looking for a new ranger as Craig moved up to Wyoming. Lucky bastage. He was a great guy. All staff are willing and able to help with any and all questions. Drive is long but so worth it. REAL silence. Absolute silence is a must for me...every 3 months or less. I usually sleep a few hours at a hotel in Sonora and then I have about 5 hours to terlingua and another 1 to 1.5 hours to immerse myself in that silence I mention. FYI...I'm sure you've seen the park boundaries go down to the river. Grassy banks camp is just OK...I'm trying out the lower madera camp for my first night in October. Supposed to be much more scenic. It's nothing like the interior part of the ranch though as RM/FM170 is right there by the river. And noise.

Too much pavement and people in the national park....for me. But I have to admit I haven't explored much there since the mid 90s and hiking emory and that general people populated tourist area. Have no doubt more pavement and people today in the NP.

Good luck on your decision. Let me know if I can address any questions about the ranch area.

Is anybody in this thread in the Northern Denver / Ft Collins area?

I'm flying into Denver and driving to Wyoming - ideally I can ship some hiking gear to your house and pick it up from you upon arrival

Cool! I wish I hadn't sold my 2003 Tassajara. I'm friends with the guy that I sold it to, but he moved, so chances of me re-acquiring it aren't great.

It’s no Colorado mountain views like some of you lucky bastards but I’ll take it.

Hoping to make it over to Colorado and Utah again in mid-late September, will it be too cold for the Crested Butte area? Any suggestions on good riding in CO around that time of year?

Grand junction and Fruita are your best weather bets but crested butte is amazing at that time of the year. Beware of all the leaf peepers it gets worse than a powder day headed up to the mountains from Denver or Colorado Springs.

edit: it does snow up there in September. I would just make a weather call a day or two before.
