In Dec of 2018, I traded my 2018, one year old (bought in Dec of 2017) Sport 2x4 for a 2019 OR 4X4 with similar gear. With trade in and a bit of negotiation (you could do that back then) I got the the 2019 OR basically for the difference between a 2x4 and 4x4. As I recall it was about $4000~ OTD. Sadly, you can't do that these days. But, if you have your heart set on the truck you described and can afford it go for it or it will eat at you and they are not getting any cheaper.

Buying a new vehicle every few years is a very good way to make sure you will be working for many more years than you want to. Buy used, drive it for seven or ten years, then buy another used vehicle. Even if you buy new drive that thing for eight or ten years and don't finance longer than 48 months. Dont finance at all unless its absolutely necessary.

have you seen the used market though? I bought a truck after driving 98 Corollas for 4 years in college and saving the majority of my time there for this purchase. I would have never considered selling this truck until now.

also I still never stop working. My life is pointless without my work

    I’m a manual fanatic, but…
I’ve been driving manuals all my life. Taco manuals since 2003. I’m trying to get a new A/T Taco right now because, we’ll, Taco. My tranny change is prompted by living in the Portland, OR area. Post COVID we are, once again the L. A. of the northwest. Stop and go traffic every time I drive, no matter the day or time. I never did mind stomping on a clutch pedal, but my commute to work has increased from a normal 50 stomps to 2-300. Crikey, my left leg! And I’m getting old.
If you live in a lower traffic area, first off, good on you. Second, stomp that clutch pedal, man. Love it until you don’t. Maybe it will be 20 years of enjoyment for you too.

thanks for the advice. sorry to hear about the traffic, I definitely tend to forget about the pain that is driving a manual sometimes.

Have you seen the new market though? Really stupid time to be buying a new or used vehicle unless there is no other choice.

I've been driving manual transmissions pretty much all my life, this is my first automatic Taco.. Manual transmissions are fun, they allow you for more control when off road etc but its hard now days for me to drive a manual transmission anymore (yes, i am getting old) my knew hurts sometimes, its hard to drink a and eat at the same time when driving as you need to apply the clutch when switching gears etc specially in heavy traffic..
    I love my automatic Taco..
But eh, there is always a first time for everything (i think) and if you have the "financial ability" why not? YOLO my friend..

    I bought a loaded M/T 2021 about 2 months ago so I'll chime in.....

The manual is FUN in the way that driving a truck with a manual is "fun". It's more entertaining and engaging. This truck, with either transmission, is not fast. At all. I'm not sure about the throttle response on the automatics but on my manual it was comically lazy. So much so that when I drove it off the lot I thought maybe something was wrong with it. I did the KDmax tune a few weeks ago and it solved (mostly) the throttle response but still is by no means "fast". So temper your expectations on what the manual does for this thing. The gearing is really wonky (veryyyy long in second and third gear) which makes it useful to put around on city streets in 2nd and 3rd lazily but even if you shift at redline in first, second gear drops well below the powerband. Still, with all that said, I would buy it all over again with the manual. In fact, I had to wait several months to get the manual in the spec I wanted. It was worth it.

Now onto the matter of "is it worth it?"......

Financially, probably not if you about have perfectly good truck with decent miles on it. The best truck is a paid for truck. However, if you are viewing this through the lens of enjoying it and buying it because you "want" to, then go ahead. Trade-in values are at a silly high level now (not for much longer though.....) and if you can get the color/spec you want with a trade difference that will not change your lifestyle in ANY way, I say do it. For me, I always end up paying a little more for exactly what I want and being happy in the long run versus getting a *deal* and making compromises that I'll regret down the road.

I would trade in and get the stick shift trans.
That’s something I think about daily.

    Lol *never* buy used.

Source: every complaint thread here in TW (or trail damage/lemon/crashed truck) contains advice "trade that crap in and make it someone ELSE'S problem".

YMMV but for me, I'll cheerfully pay the depreciation knowing that I didn't buy someone's trash.

    A few.
A good time to likely get the most for ur trade right now. And since u learned from ur current truck as far as which mods u like there wont b any wasted money or mistakes in tha area. Also I dont know what year ur current tacoma is but u would have a new one with alot less miles for a few thousand more than u currently owe.

Right now buying used can cost u more than new or at least more than the truck originally sold for with pre covid rebates and discounts

I tend to disagree if you can find a dealer willing to sell for MSRP
