What’s your 2.7’s MPGs?

I was on the border about trading my 18 SR 2.7 4x4 6AT for a new Silverado 1500 duramax. But nearly impossible to find the configuration I want right now.

I have never seen more than 18.5 mpg. I have hand calculated multiple times and have consistently seen around 16.9 mpg. My driving consists of 85% city and 15% short drives on the interstate. Even on my interstate travels I see no more than 20 mpg on a good day. And this is all with a light foot.

I see all these people posting about their 2.7s getting 22-23 mpg...HOW???

I saw 1mpg bump up when I turned off the blower motor. I just hand calculated my last tank and the average was 16.9. And it’s balls hot out. I see 14 mpg in the winter.

Is it worth pulling the plugs to see if it’s gummed up?

Truck is all stock on OEM 245/75/16 hankook HTs. Only accessory is a back rack, trailer hitch, and mud flaps...

 

I have the V6 but have a similar experience. I use my truck for work as a pool service tech so 500-1000 pounds of tools , chems and equipment on the truck and 75%+ at less than 25mph with constant acceleration/deceleration to and from stop signs in residential neighborhoods. Right now with the summer heat and me idling the truck for the AC while I eat my lunch I'm averaging like 14 - 15.5 mpg.
Shoots up to low - mid 20s on the highway though even with it loaded.
Bone stock on highway tires.

I think the people on here who say they get crazy mileage just do only highway with just themselves in the truck and must be without AC / using all the hipermiling tips they can.

 

52 mph seems to be the sweet spot for mileage. Use synthetic diff fluid. Wax the body and rain x the windshield seems to work for me. Edit: clean the maf sensor, too

 

My 2017 2.7/5MT 4X4 gets driven on 3 miles of dirt and curvy winding roads at 35-70mph on my 32 mile round trip commute and gets 21.7-22mpg consistently. I drive aggressively, rev it up and speed like hell. I have babied it before and gotten 24mpg. 245/75-16 Firestones/Hankooks/Toyos.

Wow that's crazy low like me being dumb and redlining with ECT on... Do you only do short trips where the truck never warms up? I noticed my mpg is horrible when the engine is cold. With 245s I used to get around 24mpg with 75% local driving, could get almost 28 if it was highway only, doing 70ish.

Other than that mine is a 19 same config had the same firestones too so I don't get why you don't see easily 21+ mpg even with 75% local.

Only tips I have are try to smooth out your driving and if you can coast a bit do it as the engine uses no fuel when you are coasting in gear. It's a torquey engine so let the low end grunt get you off the line as honestly I never felt the middle or top end really do much other than burn fuel and make noise.

even local driving you can pulse and glide kind of like you do on a bicycle peddle hard and coast for a second. Swap between the two so you still maintain a pretty even speed.

Any chance you have a stuck brake pad or e-brake? Maybe one of the pads is dragging... I mean you are easily in the V6 mpg territory so something isn't right. Check if any one pad is wearing more than the others or just spin the tires with it jacked up and see if any are hard to turn.

Maybe it's stuck in 4x4 mode?

I have a weird additive you might try if it is the engine causing the poor fuel economy. It's called Rewitec and it's had some testing to show it reduces friction on cylinder walls. I got a bottle to try on my Volvo but haven't had time to do it yet.

I can get 24 on the highway going no more than 65-70 with my v6.

For what it is worth, my 2017 2.7 Tacoma got close to 30 mpg. That was with predominately freeway driving, about 65 (which is slow in SC). With my 2019 v6, I got about 26 when I drove the same loop, mainly highway. Now that I work locally, the V6 has dropped back to about 23-24 mpg. I do use ECT occasionally.

 

i'm 23mpg. averaged over 70k miles and 5 years. but i drive efficiently and that's mostly highway miles. been getting low 20s lately with more city driving... ymmv.

 

City driving isn’t your best friend with these trucks. But that seems low for the 2.7 considering I’m in a v6 with e rated 33 armor lift etc and get 16/17 city and 20hwy. Your engine air filter clogged up? Check the spark plugs? Fill up at a different stations. Check these for now. Quick and easy

I've had 4 banger toyota 4x4 pickups back in the day, and this is my first tacoma with the v6. I swear the v6 i have today gets better fuel economy, and way more power than any of those 4 bangers back in the 70' and 80's.

 

I regularly get between 23mpg and 24mpg driving around town and rarely getting on the highway. I pulled my boat yesterday and the truck claimed it was getting 17.5mpg. Boat weighs about 2000lbs. I use BP mid grade ethanol free gas. I also use ECT most of the time. I have a pretty light foot just because I am usually in no hurry to get anywhere

1st hi-way leg 26mpg under foot no 5th gear cruise ( no 6 gear )

did not clock suburban miles .........

2nd leg hi-way miles return 24mpg ( included min suburban miles )

5th gear cruise some upshifting (6 gear never used )

625 miles 26 gallons used =24mpg stock 27k miles NO modz

As stated, the big MPG guys you see have to be driving either highway or extremely flat roads without much traffic lights. I work downtown so no chance I will ever get better than 17-18. However I went 50 miles one way on the highway, loaded with my dad and my 2 kids, driving 60mph with cruise and A/C on and averaged 21mpg. My morning commute I can generally average 21-22 because there is no traffic and I hit the lights just right. However on my way home, the increase in traffic and not hitting lights, I get 16 sometimes worse.

 

14.5 mpg towing about 3K
23-25 mpg normal city/highway. I have a light foot and traffic here is "easy going".

Got nearly the identical type boat and E-Z loader trailer with a 40 hp yamaha outboard. It to weights a bit over 2k lbs. Been towing a couple time this season to area lakes getting right on 19 mpg with my 2020 ac v6 auto tacoma.
