This is my project saw. I bought a 90's husq 50 off ebay that was in serious need of work upgraded to a 46 big bore kit for a 55 and air injection parts from a rancher random parts from a 51. Base gasket delete and all the maintenance items done. Strong saw. figured if i can rebuild one keeping it running cant be that be that hard. pulled it out this weekend and it starts in 3 pulls

I also have a 450 rancher that i use when one of them needs a break.

I have about 20 pines around my house that need annual pruning and limbing, I started with a Stihl MS 170 and didn't like it from the beginning. Power was there, but never really seemed to cut great. Even with new chains, etc. I went back and forth even between Oregon and Stihl chains and still didn't care for the saw, but it ran great.

Upgraded to a Stihl MS 251 CBE (easy start model) and it absolutely rips. Much better suited to what I'm doing. I'm definitely not a lumberjack, but have taken a few trees out for the neighbors because I now have a decent saw.

I kept both saws for a while (year or so) but never used the 170 much after getting the 251. I guess that's the difference between a $200 saw and a $400 saw.

Also highly recommend the Stihl Easy File sharpener system.

Good idea to carry a saw to the cabin/cottage. My daughter got stuck at a cottage after near tornadoes dropped lots of trees across the access road. Lots of cottagers with their little 12-16 inch saws worked for a couple of days to get selves out.

How do you know when it's time for a new chain? I have some oak that I'm bucking up for later splitting, and it seems like mine dulls really quickly. I made it through half of what's in the photo below, but I probably should have stopped before I started the last log that I cut. It was a struggle getting it done.

Do you sharpen them? Stihl has one of the nicest sharpening tools out there…. Just get one for the chain you’re running pitch wise and bam… sharp. When sawing, you’ll notice that the wood chips tend to get smaller snd finer when the blade is dull…

I have the Stihl all-in-one thing. I sharpened it last night in anticipation of the cutting that I did this evening. I sharpened it and ran it on both Friday and Saturday. Cuts great when I start and then goes to crap. The bigger stuff that I'm cutting is as wide as my bar is long (16").

Just seems that I used to be able to run through multiple tanks of gas before needing to sharpen, and now I can't get through a tank before it's dull again.

That’s interesting…. Iv cut 46” oak with my 20” saw and never had to stop to sharpen it. At least 2 tanks worth of cutting. You’re not hitting dirt or as they call it dirty wood? I don’t know what’s going on ?

There is a good bit of dirt in the bark. I do hit the ground when I'm severing the two pieces, but I'm not cutting channels.

Probably just going dull for hitting ground and dirt and debri in tree. Usually on the chain there is a line that tells you angle to sharpen and once you can't see that line it is time for new chain

I once had to drag a trunk across a gravel driveway. Can you guess what got lodged in the bark fissures and I found with my chain?

Ran the 500i for a few tanks last week. Spins chain on a 36” bar w/ absolutely no effort.
It’s going to turn my 440 and 460 into paper weights.
