What’s your 2.7’s MPGs?

Same here, i took a lot of crap from friends when i chose to own a v6 tacoma over another v8 tundra. I've towed a lot of stuff in my 5x10 utility trailer too. I have to keep checking at times its its still there. Only issue with the tacoma is backing up it tight places with the trailer. The tonneau cover limits what you can see what the trailer is doing, and that rear camera sucks.

 

I don't understand the hate for the I4. The V6 pulls harder, yes. And the V8 Tundra, even harder still. However, it's still a gas truck and gets annoying to listen to it holler all the time. I have a Tundra and RAM 3500 Cummins HO also, and this little Tacoma I4 has been downright impressive, especially from a chassis perspective. It really tows well for being the "corolla" of trucks!

 

I test drove the 4 cyl. tacoma. Imo it was just too dam slow for truck of its weight. The v6 was just about right when driving in town with it. My access cab v6 is even better than that test ride i did. At that time i was use to driving a v8 4.7 tundra for 19 years so you can see where i'm coming from.

 

Ah ha! I got you. Interestingly enough, the I4 impresses me more when towing because at least it's not "hunting". The transmission programming is not great. When I'm not towing with it, it's scared of RPM so its very lethargic and then jumps up rather abruptly. It's mildly annoying when it's not towing...haha

I had a Tundra , manual conversion with the V8. Was the most fun truck I ever had.

My v6 auto tacoma only hunted for the first 1000 miles or so before becoming normal in the first 4 or 5 gears same as the tundra. 6th od is nice the truck will cruise effortlessly at 1500 rpm or so on our secondary highways. I have zero issues with hunting. Can't claim the same for a buddies 2019 trd. Imo, these trucks are not factory tuned the same. Some perform much better yet have the same tsb update.

I average 22-24mpg in the city, but my Taco is not 4x4. Don't know if it makes a difference, but I always use 87 octane Chevron ethanol blend fuel.

 

I assume your trip meter is for the mileage per tank?

Highest I’ve seen is 328 out of one tank. What RPMs are you shifting at?

My truck is a 6AT I do stop and go but once I get up to speed(30-50mph) I cruise for a few minutes then stop again. The absolute worse mpg is when it’s time to merge on the highway. Even keeping a steady 65-70mph the MPGs suffer. I’d like to say I’m not in a hilly area(central NY) but it’s not all flat ground either.

 

Don’t get me wrong I didn’t buy this truck for fuel efficiency but the numbers I’m seeing is oddly low for how little power it has.

I get that an engine that has to rev to move will get less mpg than an engine that’s near close to idle at all the time, but that should equate to better city mpg as less cylinders are firing while at idle. I also get that the 2.7 is an older engine that doesn’t have new tech...but the old 2.7 trucks seem to be much better on gas.

I’ve changed gas stations 4x already. Tried premium non-ethanol, regular, and mid grade. Although the rav4 runs on the same gas and never had issues. Air filter is clean with little to no debris.

only thing I haven’t checked is plugs.

Would a sticking radiator fan clutch be the culprit? Ever since I got the truck it’s always had that loud fan sound during acceleration. Doesn’t matter if it’s cold or hot. Sounds like the damn trash truck everywhere I go.

 

I test drove a 2.7 2wd back in 2016 and thought it was absolutely gutless. Didn’t buy it. Then time came and I needed a truck. Walked in and brought this one without test driving. Thought it was alright leaving the lot. Now that I’m used to it...rav4s and Camrys feel very fast.

 

From personal experience, after that first oil change the throttle shifting definitely got better. I feel like my Taco can handle it's own in the city but the highway is different. Depending on your seating, I think some Taco owners are not at the right distance and the gas pedal is loose on their foot. If I really push my Taco, it will shift quick and get on step quick. Side tip, if you are tall like me, buy the Desert Does It back seat jackers (using all of them @ 1.50 inch rise). Makes the typical city Taco trip so much better.

 

good idea. I’m gonna try an oil additive to see if it’ll help. I see it all the time but it never crossed my mind that this might actually be beneficial.

I saw a heavy drop in fuel economy this past winter while the engine was getting up to temp. 12-13mpg on a regular then 14-15 once warmed up and commuting down the interstate.

I’ve noticed a major mpg killer is when I’m just above 2k rpm accelerating. If I absolutely feather the pedal and hold up traffic, I see 17-ish on the dash. If I try to keep up with traffic slowly I drop 1 mpg within a minute or two on the dash. Wether or not that translate over to hand calculated numbers idk, but I do know I see shit MPGs either way and it all adds up.

I put the t case in 4hi and 4lo the other day just to get the fluids spinning so nothing seizes up. Could it have been stuck? Very slight chance. The truck did feel a hair faster but idk if it was just because I had just gotten out of 4 lo.

As much as I like the simplicity and primitive nature of the 2.7 it really does suck ass in a modern vehicle. Doesn’t help that my other car is a 91 vette. But hey at least my cars won’t ever get hacked or remotely tracked.

 

Yes, I only do mileage per tank. I shift anywhere between 2500 to 5000rpms or when the torque curve starts nosing over. I occasionally hit the rev limiter. I haul ass by default. Roads are hilly and curvy here. Probably 10 stoplights on my commute.

On highway trips it gets slightly better mileage. Probably 22.5 vs high 21s on my work commute. Driving like a grandma is not fun to me so the 24mpg isn't worth it to me to have to alter my driving style so drastically.

I did a tank of non-ethanol recently and it was only slightly better. Not worth the extra expense. Non-ethanol tank below 22mpg in 420 miles

 

The older taco's with a 2.7 were a hell of a lot lighter. Weight does matter.

 

Judging by your first post sounds like your getting the advertised EPA mileage. No sure what your your concern is. 85% city; your going to get bad mpg in pretty anything that is a ICE.

Also take into consideration where other people on here are driving. Some people live and commute in areas that are flat and close to sea level. Others live in hilly mountainous areas. That greatly effects mpg. And some people just exaggerate.

 

Has anyone added an after market hitch to their 2.7? I know the 2.7 has over 3000lbs towing capacity but is that with a towing package (transmission cooler, larger alternator)? Want to add one but not sure of it’s limits, don’t want to ruin the trans.
