The SKINNY on skinny tires

I would avoid the mts if you're gonna be driving in the cold. They can handle the super deep stuff, but won't do well with snow or ice on the pavement.

Depending on the tire, they can range from a moderate hum to having to raise your voice to talk on the highway, especially once they wear down.

If you want a more aggressive tire, there are some r/t options that look tough and have a 3 peak mountain snowflake rating, or at least a strong reputation for winter driving

 

Anyone know the skinny on 18" tires available is something around a 33 x 10.5? Wanting to use my stock limited wheels with a 2.5" lift on my truck with minimal cutting. Looks like a lot of skinny options for 16 and 17" wheels. Not seeing much on the 18".

 

Looking to join the tall skinny club. I have the stock 16" wheels right now. Was thinking of buying some 17" wheels and going 255/80r17 either wildpeaks or toyo at3. Was also considering the stmaxx in the 255/85r16 with stock wheels and but am concerned about the added weight. I am on stock gears. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm running 255/85r16 S/T Maxx on stock gears and can't really tell much difference. The truck was slow before, its still slow now.

 

LOL! Kinda the answer I was hoping for actually. As a newer Tacoma owner I'm kinda surprised these things are so damn gutless. For all the hype they sure got their flaws, haha!

 

My 255/80/17 I've had for a month now. 50lbs the Toyo AT3. around town on the freeway is... Fine. Haven't went up a mountain yet.

 

Where are you getting most of the rubbing?

 

Rear fender liner outboard near the fender on compression and turn. pinch weld on full compression and upper fender on full compression.

I knew it was going too.
Other work is in the pipeline for the truck which will solve that but create other spots. It will all be addressed.

35s take work to fit. If you don’t want any rubbing stay 32s. 33s if you relocate the lowers with the JD kit.

 

I'm really considering the Toyo AT3 over Cooper ST Max. Haven't decided 100% yet.
I plan to run them Fall-Spring in Ohio.

 

Considering the 255/80r17 is "technically" a 33, there are users here running them without much (if any) modification if they run a close-to-oem offset. I think a lot of it is wheel selection and caster adjustments.

EDIT: Makes me wonder how your fitment would be if you removed your spacers!

 

What r/t tires are decent in snow? I am not really finding much online.

 

Of all my searching, the Toyo is the only one I’ve seen ONE positive snow review of. The Nitto’s people complain about non stop, the only other option for an R/T is Kenda Klever and I haven’t seen anything on those yet.

Spacers are on because the rear will need to clear shock relocation. Then kept on front for same track. You don’t want to run narrow front wide rear.

 

Skinny's, LT and glass on the front still finishing up the rear suspension but loving it so far....

 

The AT3 should naturally be a better performer in snowy and icy conditions with better siping. I've had the ST Maxx and liked them but now run th Falken AT3W's an the snowy and wet performance is better due to siping.

Ahh gotcha, I didn't know relocation required higher offset. Any idea how much that changes clearance?

I've seen a few mentions that the klevers do well in the snow. They don't have the official 3pms rating, but they have a ton of siping. The the baja boss ats are considered more of an rt with how aggressive the side lugs are, and they do have a 3pms rating.
