What wheels did you go with for your runner?

 

Currently I have the stock sr5 wheels looking to do the rrw wheels In a -12 offset for a little wider tread track

 

I was getting up to 21 HWY when I had stock size KO2's. Of course, it drops off quickly above 65-70.

Generally, I'm getting 15-16 on the 295's. But, I have seen up to 19.9 at 55-60 MPH. At 80, I get 12-13.

Anyway by chance that the $100 off is still applicable on the Yokohama geolandar mt as I am looking to get a set fairly quickly. Just happened to come across this post.

I wouldn't let one failure deter you. Every tire is going to have failures and there is no telling what may have been hit on the road.

If you're concerned about them not lasting, get the certificates.

 

I'm more concerned about my family riding on them.

This reminded me of the time I purchased tires for my wife's car, the sales person asked if I'd like to purchase a protection plan?
So I asked what does the plan cover?
They said flats or damage to the tire that would be considered unrepairable, the protection plan would replace the tire for Free!
So I asked how much it cost?
They said $29.99
I said Cool!
When they rang it up the protection plan was listed as $120???
I ask the sales person, didn't you say it was $30 for the protection plan?
They said YES! Per tire!
I said I didn't want to pay to protect 4 tires. "I told them I only want protection for one tire!"
Sales person ask which tire I wanted the protection for??
I told them "only" the one that gets damaged!!! LOL!!
The sales person said I would have to choose which tire?!
I told them make it the passenger rear!
Because no matter which tire blows out?? When I bring it in; it will be the passenger rear!!! LMAO!!

Needless to say they didn't give me the protection.
HAHAHAHA!!

 

I tried that once too and they told me that they would go pull the serial number of the tire and only that one would be protected. It is a decent expense on top of everything else you are paying for.

As for the concern about your family riding on them, you're going to have that with any tire. If you want a mileage warranty, you're probably best getting at AT tire. If you want an MT, I think this is one of the better ones. Again, that single failure wouldn't deter me.

 

Agreed it could be an isolated incident??
I'd feel much more comfortable about it if Yokohama jumped up and said that was absolutely unacceptable and gave him a free replacement. (At least that would show they believed in the quality of their tires) IMHO.
But if the Company has the attitude that this is normal??? Or it's none of their concern?? (Basically "Buyer beware")
That concerns me.
I don't know maybe I'm overly cautious?? But I need to make the best decision I can for my kids. (And this is just my personal opinion)

 

I totally understand, and am not saying that you are wrong.

I guess a point that I'm trying to illustrate (poorly) is that many people come to forums to complain of things that go wrong. This thread is full of people talking about how awesome these tires are. Good mileage, good treadwear, relatively low weight...all of this being relative to other MTs. Makes me think that this is the tire to go with. 30 pages of positives and 1 post with a negative. There are probably more negatives, but I'm not going back to find them all.

At some point, the company has to say "we aren't responsible for what you do" after purchase. MTs are bought because people are going to be (or at least want to be perceived as) going offroad and putting the tires into extreme circumstances. If the tread lug coming off was a common issue, you'd see a LOT of people in this thread screaming foul. That isn't the case.

I've had a piece of metal enter into a tire through the sidewall. The piece of metal the tire tech showed me was about a 1" x 5" piece of steel. That certainly wasn't the tires fault.

I'm not saying that the fault of the tire in this case isn't a problem with manufacturing or quality control. It very well could be! But I think it is more probable that the driver hit something (without his knowledge) in the road that caused the damage.

 

Looks like I'll be joining the club. I found 3 near new LT255/85R16 locally for a deal too good to pass up so just need to pick them up and order 2 more so I have a full set. Very excited about going to skinny 33's but a bit apprehensive about going from an AT to an MT and from an SL to an E load tire. Fingers crossed!

 

I think I'm going to go to this size when mine wear out.

 

Would it be bad if you ran 295/70/17, and had your spare as 285/75:17?

1/2 inch difference in diameter

 

You should be fine as long as you run the spare in the front, and don’t use 4wd.
Even though open differentials theoretically can handle variances like when you make a sharp turn, it’s not advised to run mis-matched for high speeds or for long.

 

285/75/17 seems to be backordered, can't find these anywhere. what are yalls thoughts on these vs 295/70/17?
