    Mall Crawler!
21' TRD OffRoad 2" 887 OME on Bilstein 5100's. 285/70R17 General Grabbers G3 17x8.5" Icon TRD wheels (Gun metal gray) 4.75" BS
    Well both are 4x4.
The difference will come with the crawl control. (You can get a locker for the TRD Sport that would work better than the OEM locker.)
You will probably only see the difference when driving on soft sand with stock tires. (Those tires aren't very good) a Sport will probably get stuck and need rescuing?
The TRD Offroad will probably get stuck also but can use the crawl control to self rescue.

The difference is dependent on a very specific set of criteria's. (99% of Tacoma owners will never put themselves in that position)

Is the Crawl control necessary?? NO!!

Is it nice to have? Absolutely!
However most, if not all people before doing any offroading will upgrade tires and other things which will make their truck more than capable.

With decent skill and wheeling experience most people will never use the Crawl Control.
    Much like your auto insurance.
    (MY opinion)
Better to have it and not need it. Than need it and not have it.
99% of the people who buy a Sport? Want the hood scoop and color matched fenders.

I've been off the road in my Sport and lived to tell the tale. I was a young man in those days, handsome and lean, laughing in the face of death. There was many a dicey moment, lives could easily have been lost, paint scratched, tires torn. I still wonder how I survived out there in the pitiless dirt and unforgiving grass, indomitable will obviously.

For sweet mercy's sake, don't take your Sport off the road. You have been warned!

Since this is a Friday thread I saw a suburu outback do everything my tacoma could do.

Nothing technical, sand, mud, and climbs.

Even the 4x2 can get you through some tough terrain.

Took my completely inexperienced buddy out to Broken Arrow in Sedona with his 2018 Sport 4x4.

It handled the trail in the exact same manner as my 2016 Offroad 4x4.

For most everything, it will perform the same.

OR has a locking diff. Sport has a lot more horsepower, obviously eliminating the need for a locker, and or crawl control.

idk about 3rd gens, but my TRD Sport is just as capable as the other trims. Might not have a locker but it sees dirt and rock quite a bit. I took it off road like 3 weeks after purchase.
In fact, if you plan to do any upgrading, buying the cheaper trims save you money long term since you can just spend that package upsell money on better equipment.

The OR has the same potential HP, it's just been detuned.

but they literally are tuned to 278HP from the factory across all trims? You have a source for this info?

About a week ago, I was on a trail that I was the only non-UTV on, and four-low is all that I needed. I do have a (stock) TRD OR, but a Sport would have worked just as well.

Its can handle 99% of what typical Pros and off-roads see, a bit of sand, a bit of mud, a bit rocky roads. Its will also get stuck where 99% of TRD Pros and off roads get stuck. That being said, don't try to do what you see the guys with 36s or 37s and long travel suspension do.

We don't need no stinking sources!

Besides, we keep this on the down-low, don't want the OR kids to know we got the juice on them.
