i'd drive a manual if they sold them. apparently they only put shitty auto boxes on 2wd tacomas. looking around currently (trying to get mine totaled after getting rear-ended) and there's no manual trucks around. wtf?

I was basing the estimate off of what other vehicles with the same motor get, using an electric fan. The amount of parasitic loss from an electric fan depends on how much it's drawing from the electrical system, how much power the alternator is already generating (itself a parasitic loss) and whether or not the vehicle's system can handle the additional draw without demanding more from the motor. I don't know that information, so I used the motor's performance in other vehicles as a proxy; It looks like it gets about 25-30 more HP in a transverse mounted application without a mechanical fan, so that's the number I used.

I love how I can go around corners in 3rd easy (4.88) and how my tires dig in coming out of corners in 2nd (tune)............feel it in my ass dyno. MT. Baby. FTW!

Took a look at this engine masters video which I trust more. If our fans are fully locked they'll be drawing way more than 5 HP. A fully locked fan should be about the same as one with no clutch. A 30 amp electric fan would draw less than 2 HP.

The article I linked to didn’t say a mechanical fan only used 5 hp it said that was a typical gain swapping from mechanical to electric. If you gained 30 hp going to electric fan I can assure you there would be no mechanical cooling fans being sold today. An electric fan providing the same cooling as a mechanical fan isn’t free energy. An electrical fan pulls power from the alternator and a fan giving the same cooling flow as a mechanical would draw a lot of current and a load on the engine. The small gain on hp is from getting rid of the wasted load of fan clutch slippage when the fans not needed at the vehicles runnning speed. The trade off is in potentially less reliable than the well proven mechanical fan especially for diy conversions.

Did you watch the video? A clutched fan, that was cold so not locked, took 14 HP to spin. A fan without a clutch at all took 30 HP and you can reasonable assume a fully locked clutched fan will draw about the same. Our fans lock based on how hot it is.

They say they have tested electric fans in the past and they draw about 30 amps. It takes about 1 HP for the alternator to produce 30 amps. Electric fans are much more efficient than mechanical fans and that's the reason most cars on the road use them.

To add: The alternator in your vehicle is already generating excess electricity to charge the battery and keep it topped off. The question is not "would an electrical fan add to the load on the motor," it is "would an electrical fan need more power than the alternator can deliver, on top of all of the other loads it is currently generating power for." And the answer is almost certainly that the alternator has enough excess generation.

I had I vehicle with AT - I bought a Sienna when kids came , had visiting family, had road trips, etc. (Certainly a great tool for the job!). I enjoyed the vehicle - not the AT...

Oh but I tried hard to avoid it. Of course Toyota would not cooperate...
I looked at getting a Mercedes 'Vito' from Europe, but the US government would not let go of protectionism and would not allow it... It all became too hard so I gave-up.
    - Technically, it was my wife's, but still...

I'll have a stick until I have 2 (or 4) electric motors providing POWEEEER!

I drove wranglers for almost 2 decades. Then, went to a Compass (poor decision based on that relationship-which was also a poor decision). When I saw the amount my trade in was worth, I decided to go kick the tires. The model I wanted wasnt available, and likely wouldnt be for months. They had a sport trim model with those features, in WCP and with an MT. As I know the chip shortage has an end date, and the amount they were offering me for a trade in wasnt going to go any higher, I jumped on the chance to drive a stick again. Wasnt even a consideration before that. I honestly didnt know they made MT anymore for trucks.

The alternator doesn’t produce its full output (and therefore full drag) at all times. Electrical load on the system changes the physical drag on the alternator belt.

That said, e-fans, which can be PWM speed controlled, will be more power efficient per unit of cooling airflow.

most cars probably use them because they don’t have longitudinal engine layouts, but yes e-fans are more efficient

The engineer in me (electrical control systems) made me do a lot more research into the viscous temperature sensing clutch on our tacoma fans, typical performance gains from those Tacoma owners on TW who have made a conversion to an electric fan, other youtube videos doing dyno tests of mechanical and clutch fans, and other reputable sources. And what I found convinced me no way would I do that swap to an aftermarket electric fan for what I’m sure wouldn’t give me the cooling reliability of my oem fan and only a marginal hp gain of 5 hp and likely even less. You do your own research though, it’s your truck.
    Same goes for you @RX1cobra.

Just curious, what is your dislike for Manuel transmissions ? And what in the world is wrong with rowing a boat ?
