So my Saturday evening involved a blind tasting that my wife set up for me. Poured them off into a Glencairn before tasting as the colored cordial glasses she used weren’t the best for sipping (or seeing).

Damned if I could pick any of them right…went 0 for 6 and was totally shocked. In any event, think the Down Home and New Riff wound up being my favorites, but am questioning my palate after that effort. The Old Carter (Batch 10) really stood out…as the sweetest and most lush of the bunch (almost syrupy by comparison), and it really didn’t drink like the second highest proof of the lot. Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn’t that. Really thought she must have gotten them mixed up, but a full pour proved that not to be so. Tried a full pour of the Riff, too…just to be sure.

Had to sample a couple Advil this morning.

Great wife you have! Need to search for the New Riff as I have heard good reviews.

Hibiki was my gateway into Japanese whisky. Then came Yamazaki and Nikka FTB. If you get a chance, pick up Nikka Taketsuru and Nikka Miyagikyo. All very good.

I have seen a lot of people talk about Yamazaki, FTB is amazing, but I'll have to try and pick up those other Nikkas!

I'm not a fan of peaty scotch, but just a light hint is damn good. First Japanese I tried that did this successfully was Hakushu. I haven't found another bottle for a reasonable price, but I keep looking. The Nikka Miyagikyo is close to that.

driving through Oregon and I was stopping at liquor stores and picking up a few bottles. They don't have sales tax but after I got home and looked it up they are #2 highest liquor tax state in America. My state is #1. But in Oregon they just include it in the list price and it doesn't show on the receipt. Still, I think I saved around 20% on some bottles I buy here.

I picked up an Irish bottle I've never seen or noticed before. The box claims to be the only peated Irish whiskey today. Connemara peated single malt Irish whiskey. I like it.
