Pine will have a better end result when you apply wood conditioner and let dry. Otherwise the stain will be uneven.

So Depends what color stain you use (i prefer oil based) but basically i use a microfiber rag, you can get a 10 pack at autozone or other car parts place. Dip a small corner of rag, about size dime let excess drip off before wiping the box. Wipe a small section of the box with corner of rag then even it out with the dry part of the rag. I dont "paint" it necessarily but more like waxing a car. A little stain and wipe evenly, If that makes sense.

Apply one coat then if you want darker apply another coat. Let dry Then apply clear coat in satin or gloss or semigloss. The clear coat you can get spray can or apply with foam brush. Sand lightly between coats of poly

 

Sweet! I was told oil based was the way to go, but the person who told me isn't suuuuuper knowledgeable. I've got the conditioner on hand and plenty of microfiber towels.
Any brands of coating you prefer?

 

Satin is nice, or semigloss. Minwax is what i use. The butcher block oil is better for cutting boards or food utensils. Not really that good for pine box.

Ive noticed the clear coats in can are thicker, you can thin them with mineral spirits. 75% poly 25% mineral spirits, Otherwise you get streaks of thicker coat. Spray can you spray light coat, let dry then second coat.

 

The rest is trial and error for me anyways

 

You can seal it with shellac first then coat with Poly thinned with mineral spirits using a foam brush or blue shop towel. This will help stop blotching. I use Varathan Poly in satin.

 

another question on finishing if I may

does anyone have a HVLP turbine sprayer like a Fuji? Was it worth the money? Do you use it frequently enough as a home woodworker?

I have the Mini Mite 5 and I like it alot. Is it money well spent? For me yes, it makes finishing bigger projects so much easier with a better finish. I've sprayed a hall table with shellac and Target EM2000 waterborne finish flawlessly. I will be spraying new doors for the kitchen with SW Emerald Urethane Trim paint which will be thinned. You may not need a high end unit if all you're spraying is the odd small project. A Semi-Pro 2 model may suit your needs if all you use are waterborne or solvent base finishes.

After changing the oil on my taco I got some shop time today.
Rounded over all the edges on the legs and test fit them in the pocket on the top.

I trimmed about 1/8" of the sides of the legs to make it easier to get in the pocket, this will also allow for wood movement.

The legs will get a few screws right in the center section and no glue, this should also allow for wood movement.

Brushed on a coat of wbp, maybe do 2 more.

 

Depends on what type of finishes you want to spray. Just by looking at the specs it is very limited in what you can spray. It's only rated at 2.4 CFM and .9mm needle and nozzle so that limits it you to very thin materials. It does include a 1.8mm needle but it doesn't have the CFM to spray thick materials. The Fuji Hobby Pro and Semi Pro2 is much more versitile.

 

I ended up picking up the same brand of satin finish; apparently Home Depot doesn't carry minwax. I'm in the middle of doing the test swatches. I think one of my cans of stain is all fucked up, idk if I used it unmixed or what, but the other ones all look really good so far. Just needs sealed.

Home depot no longer carries minwax, they closed it out, now they carry varathane.
Loews no longer carries varathane, they closed it out, now they carry minwax.

This happened a few years ago, I bought a gallon of water based poly from each at the time for half price. My take on the finishes is that minwax polycrylic is better sprayed and varathan is better if brushed as it's thicker and builds faster.

I remember now, i got the Spar stuff from minwax at Ace hardware.

 

My favorite spar varnish is mcloskys man-o-war brand. I put 2 coats on ash boards on my utility trailer 2 years ago and it's still holding up great, Michigan winters and all.

 

Thats awesome. I should have thinned the minwax stuff out a little. I put two coats on a wine barrel rocker and it was prob like 4 of the regular poly! Turned out nice though...
